Small Moves in Toronto: Who to Hire for One Room or a Few Items

Moving one bedroom should not mean paying for a truck big enough for a whole house. But a low hourly rate can still turn into a large bill once the minimum charge, van fee and travel time appear.

Start with MicroMoves for a small move that needs a moving crew. Its one-hour minimum makes it a sensible first quote. Compare the full invoice, including its separate van fee. If you can supply the lifting help and only need a vehicle and driver, Your Friend with a Cube Van's Club 85 is the clearer alternative.

The main deal-breaker is labour. A driver, a helper and a two-person moving crew are different services. Choose the one that matches what you can actually do.

Prices and policies were checked on September 16, 2026. These are starting points for quotes, not promises that every move will fit the advertised minimum.

MicroMoves: our first quote for a small full-service move

MicroMoves handles small apartment moves, single items and moves within the same home. Its official service information advertises a one-hour minimum. That matters when your inventory is a bed, desk and packed boxes rather than every room in a house.

The catch is its Reservation & Van Fee. This is a separate upfront charge. It is not deducted from the final invoice. Ask for its amount before comparing MicroMoves with another company.

Its FAQ also says customers cannot help with the move or ride in the truck. It will reassemble furniture only if its crew took it apart. Send a full inventory and furniture photos before deciding what to dismantle yourself.

Book this when you want the lifting handled. Don't budget around finishing within an hour simply because that is the minimum.

The 10% Instagram offer is advertised, but needs a written quote

A May 12, 2026 post on MicroMoves' official account advertises 10% off a future move for following @micromovesto. The post itself is on @micromovesinc.

We confirmed the advertisement on September 16. We could not verify redemption, eligible charges, tax treatment or an expiry date without arranging a quote. Confidence is high that the offer was advertised, but low that every current booking qualifies. Ask 647-203-8069 which account and charges apply, then have the saving written into your estimate.

Your Friend with a Cube Van: best if you need a driver

Club 85 advertises a cargo van with a driver for $85 per hour, with a one-hour minimum. You supply the labour. The page says conditions and other fees can apply, so $85 is not a guaranteed final bill.

This solves a common problem: you and a friend can move the boxes, but neither of you wants to drive a rental van downtown.

It does not solve a lifting problem. If nobody can safely carry the sofa, request the company's apartment or condo moving service instead. Call 416-960-2048 and be clear about which service you want.

Our pick is Club 85 when the driver is the missing piece. Choose a full crew when the people are the missing piece.

Six Moving: compare a proper mini-move quote

Six Moving's mini-move service covers smaller jobs. Call 647-973-3676 with your actual item list, rather than asking for the price of a vague “one-bedroom move.”

Its terms make several costs worth checking. HST is extra. Time includes parking and setting up, then runs until equipment is back in the truck. After the minimum, time rounds up in half-hour steps.

The usual first-hour deposit is credited to the bill. Online payments and e-transfers require a three-hour deposit. That wording does not establish a universal three-hour service minimum. Get the minimum for your job in writing.

The terms advertise a 3% cash discount. We verified the wording, not a completed transaction. Confirm which charges receive it and get an invoice. A building's required certificate of insurance needs a week's notice and carries a listed $50 administration fee.

Choose Six Moving when its written quote covers the extra work your move needs. Its FAQ is also useful for planning supplies and advance booking.

MoovDrop: useful for a few items, with clear limits

MoovDrop lets you choose vehicles ranging from a sedan to a large truck. That makes it worth comparing for a Marketplace pickup or a few pieces of furniture.

You must photograph the items before requesting the move and choose a vehicle that fits. Poorly packed or unlisted items can cause problems. Its guidelines say you should be ready to help with items that need two people.

The help centre says drivers load and unload, but entering your home is a separate Home Helping Service. Do not assume the booking supplies two movers who can carry everything upstairs without you.

The homepage lists a $1-per-minute waiting fee after 15 minutes. The FAQ separately says loading allowances depend on vehicle size. Confirm both for your booking. Cancellation can also carry charges once a driver accepts. The current iPhone app listing says Home Helping questions now appear for each address, with included on-site time shown up front. Check both ends of the move.

Choose this for a clearly measured, clearly described job. We could not verify the claim that it is always 20% to 40% cheaper than a moving company. Compare the actual total for the same work.

Taskrabbit, U-Haul and Home Depot: when doing part yourself makes sense

A rental van and paid lifting help can be a good middle ground. You do the packing and driving. Someone else handles the heavy work.

With Taskrabbit's Toronto movers, read each person's listing. Confirm whether the booking includes a vehicle, one person or two, tools, blankets and furniture assembly. Minimum hours can differ.

The Tasker rate is not the whole bill. Taskrabbit confirms an additional service fee, and taxes or other displayed charges can apply. Compare the booking total.

U-Haul Moving Help supplies labour through separate providers. You still arrange the driving. Booking helpers at each end does not turn the rental into a van-with-driver service.

For the vehicle quote, include fuel, distance charges, tax, equipment and any protection you choose. An old “$40 truck” story does not tell you what your date, route and rental period will cost.

Home Depot vehicle rentals require a driver aged at least 21, a valid licence and a credit card for a $500 deposit. You also need insurance for damage or injury you cause while driving a vehicle you do not own. You cannot buy that insurance from Home Depot.

Its Canadian FAQ lists a 90-minute vehicle minimum and return to the same store. Fuel must be replaced, and the FAQ requires a fuel receipt. Check the actual vehicle and rate with that store.

On September 16, the Leaside rental page (101 Wicksteed Avenue) listed a small cargo van at $24.95 for 90 minutes. Extra time was $7.50 per 15 minutes. Longer rentals were $99.95 for four hours or $139.95 daily. It advertised unlimited kilometres. These are displayed rental rates, not a checkout total; confirm tax, fuel and any other charges before booking.

A reservation request is not a confirmed vehicle. Wait for the confirmation email. For a same-day rental, call the store.

An overnight deal is not confirmed. We could not verify the claim that collecting near closing gives you a free overnight rental. Confidence is low. The current FAQ says extra time costs extra. Only use an overnight arrangement that the rental desk confirms in writing.

Choose a do-it-yourself move only when you have a willing, capable driver and enough lifting help. Don't let a cheap rental rate decide that for you.

Miracle Movers and the older WWP recommendation

Miracle Movers publishes a two-hour minimum for two movers, or three hours for three movers. After that, it bills in 15-minute steps. The rate includes basic moving equipment and basic furniture assembly, but a separate travel charge covers the trip from its base and back.

This is worth a comparison quote when your “small” move has become a studio's worth of furniture. Ask 416-855-3068 for the full minimum bill.

WWP is a lower-confidence lead, checked September 16, 2026. Older customer accounts identify a small operator, Carlos, at 416-240-7241, with a four-hour minimum and payment after unloading. We could not independently confirm its current service, minimum, prices or payment rules.

Those older accounts included a roughly $450 move, but that is not a current offer. If you pursue this lead, first confirm the business identity, insurance and written terms. A four-hour minimum would be a poor fit for one quick item unless the total still beats other quotes.

Ask for the minimum total bill

Use the same inventory and date for every quote. Otherwise, you are comparing different jobs.

Ask each company to spell out:

• The number of movers, vehicle size and minimum billed time.
• The van, reservation and travel charges, including whether a deposit comes off the final bill.
• When the clock starts and stops, and how extra time is rounded.
• Packing, wrapping, disassembly and reassembly costs.
• Stairs, long carries, parking and building paperwork.
• Tax, cancellation terms and the price if the job takes longer.
• Damage coverage, exclusions and the deadline for reporting a problem.

Here is a simple illustration, not a Toronto price quote. At $175 an hour, two hours cost $350 and three cost $525. Add a hypothetical $75 vehicle fee and those totals become $425 and $600 before tax. A lower hourly rate with a longer minimum could cost more.

Nor does a $350 estimate prove a company is a scam. The useful questions are what it includes, who is doing the work and what the contract says.

Ontario's guide to hiring a mover recommends at least three written estimates. Moving contracts over $50 must be in writing. When an estimate forms part of the contract, the mover generally cannot charge more than 10% above it unless you agree to additional supplies or services and the increase.

The province also says a mover cannot hold your belongings to pressure you into renegotiating. Keep the agreed inventory, estimate and messages together. Photograph the load and note missing or damaged items before the crew leaves. If there is a dispute, use Ontario's consumer-complaint guide.

A one-kilometre condo move still needs a plan

The drive can be the easiest part. Getting from your unit to the lift, through the loading dock and into the next building happens even when the new place is on the same street.

Ask both buildings about elevator and loading-dock reservations. Plan the second slot around the expected loading time and travel, with a buffer. Two identical short windows can leave you racing to unload. Widely separated windows can leave a paid crew waiting. Have the mover help choose the times.

Give them door measurements, stairs, long hallways and truck-clearance limits. Ask the building about deposits, protection for lifts and any insurance certificate it requires.

Count the small stuff too. Bedding, kitchen appliances, shoes, dishes and wall decorations turn into more boxes than a quick look around the room suggests.

For IKEA and other flat-pack furniture, follow the instructions for the actual model and agree on a plan with the mover. A bedframe may need to come apart. A sturdy small table may be better left together. Don't dismantle everything first and assume the crew will rebuild it.

For most people, moving a couch and mattress a kilometre by dolly over several days is a bad saving. If you have overlapping leases, carry easy light items separately and reserve the vehicle or movers for the awkward load.

Friends can help if they genuinely want to. Give them an honest item list and time estimate, and agree on a thank-you. Don't pressure someone with an injury, limited time or no interest in heavy lifting. A promise of pizza does not change what they can carry.

Send every mover the same inventory

List each large item, approximate box count, pickup and drop-off floors, stairs, elevator bookings, walking distance to the truck and anything that needs disassembly. Add photos of tight doors and oversized furniture.

Compare the minimum total, not the hourly rate. A cheap two-hour minimum can beat a lower hourly price with a four-hour minimum. Get the business name and written confirmation before paying a deposit.

Pack and label before the crew arrives. Empty drawers unless the mover approves leaving them filled. Keep medication, documents, keys and electronics you need that night with you. For a normal one-room move, get three quotes with the same item list. Choose the smallest suitable service that covers the work you need. The cheapest hour is rarely the most useful number.
