For a sensible price on hair colour, a cut and a blow-dry in Toronto, start with Emerald Hair & Beauty in Leslieville. Its posted prices work out to $125–$135 and up for regular root colour, a cut and a finished blow-dry. For the west end, Lola is our first call, with roots, cut and style starting at $160. Near Yonge and Eglinton, HairTree is a useful $155-and-up alternative. If knowing the colour brand is your first concern, The Manor clearly identifies Goldwell colour, with roots, cut and style starting around $200.
The catch is the word starting. Long hair, extra colour, a different stylist or a bigger change can raise the bill. A root touch-up price does not cover becoming blonde.
This guide is for someone who wants good hair and a repeatable bill. That includes women in their 60s and beyond, but there is no reason to choose a cut by age. Your texture, colour history, taste and patience for styling matter much more.
Our verdict: get a consultation with Emerald first if value comes first. Compare Lola for Ossington or Queen West, HairTree for Midtown, or The Manor for clearer colour-product information. LES Ossington adds a gender-neutral option with lower starting prices than LES Bathurst. We would put GOA Eglinton below HairTree for a first colour enquiry because of the recent colour complaints described below. H&CO adds a King West option, but its complete finishing price needs confirming. DSQUARE is worth a call, but its low colour-and-cut total needs a finishing check. Kismet is a stronger higher-budget lead for a calm appointment, based on the review sample. Skip a student appointment if you want the speed and continuity of an established stylist.
How we chose: we checked official menus, booking pages, salon portfolios and Google customer reviews. These are research-based recommendations, not claims that we visited or tested the salons. Original prices were checked on September 26, 2026. The four west-end additions were checked on September 27; Lola's menu was rechecked on September 29. GOA, CL Salon, LES Studio and Marca College were added and checked on September 29. All amounts are Canadian dollars before HST and any optional tip.
How to read the review notes: we read Google review samples for all 17 salon brands across 24 locations on September 26–29, 2026. Branches were checked separately, including GOA and LES. We compared praise with critical accounts and read owner replies where shown. These are customer reports, not independently verified events or a count of every review. Old complaints and different services are identified where relevant.
What will colour, a cut and styling actually cost?

These prices compare ordinary root colour plus a haircut and a finished style. They do not compare highlights, bleach, colour correction or a dramatic change. Totals are our arithmetic from the linked menus, not personal quotes.
| Salon and area | Root colour + cut + finish | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Emerald, Leslieville | $125+ short; $135+ medium/long | Uses the haircut add-on, not the full standalone haircut price |
| Hair Play, St. Clair West | $150+ | Confirm the posted starting rates and extra product charges |
| HairTree, Midtown or Yorkville | $155+ | Confirm the location, stylist and length surcharge |
| Parlour, Queen and Ossington | $157+ with junior stylist Dolly | A specific stylist tier; read the cut-consistency concerns below |
| Lola, Ossington or Parkdale | $160–$258 before extras | Starting rates across stylist levels; haircut includes washing and styling |
| N15, Bay Street | $163+ at the $64 haircut tier | Higher stylist tiers and length can cost more |
| Joseph Head, Queen East | $180+ using the $70 scissors cut | Check any extra colour or toner needed |
| The Cabinet, Queen and Portland | $180–$260 for a two-hour maintenance appointment | Tip-free; HST and an environmental fee are extra; extra time costs more |
| The Manor, Mount Pleasant | $200+ | Consultation and extra regrowth rules matter |
| Kismet, Leslieville | Example: $216+ short; $234+ bob with Alexis | Confirm the colour rate and gratuity policy for your stylist |
| DSQUARE, Yonge and Eglinton | Not yet a confirmed complete total: $135+ for roots and a $60 cut | A separate $35+ blow-dry would bring this to $170+ |
| H&CO, King West | Not yet a confirmed complete total: $185+ for roots and a cut | A separate $56+ blow-dry would bring the floor to $241+ |
| GOA Richmond | $185+ with the Signature cut | Roots $100 + Signature cut $85; this cut explicitly includes a blow-dry |
| LES Ossington, 827 College | $159+ short; $170+ medium; $200+ long | Regular-cut floors, not apprentice rates; prior-day colour consultation required |
| LES Bathurst, 392 College | $210+ short; $225+ medium; $240+ long | Higher starting cut prices than Ossington; consultation confirms the combination |
| CL Salon, Bathurst | $215+ | Roots $130 + regular cut $85; Amanda’s cut tier adds $5 |
| Marca College, Danforth | Combined total not confirmed: $55 roots/blow-dry + $22 haircut listed | Ask whether the $77 combination applies; farther east than Leslieville |
| GBX student salon, Gladstone | $66+ with a natural blow-dry | Supervised student service; allow more time and confirm any styling upgrade |
For a full single colour rather than roots alone, Emerald works out to $150–$160+, Hair Play $180+, N15 $202+, HairTree $205+, and Joseph Head $245+ using the same haircut choices. These are not prices for lightening previously coloured hair.
Remember the amount you will actually pay
Ontario's HST is 13%. A $150 appointment becomes $169.50 after tax. If you choose to add a 15% tip on the pre-tax service price, the final amount becomes $192.
| Service subtotal | With 13% HST | With HST and an optional 15% pre-tax tip |
|---|---|---|
| $125 | $141.25 | $160.00 |
| $135 | $152.55 | $172.80 |
| $155 | $175.15 | $198.40 |
| $180 | $203.40 | $230.40 |
| $200 | $226.00 | $256.00 |
That is why a $200 service budget and a $200 door-to-door spending limit are different things. Say which one you mean when asking for a quote. Tipping is optional, and a salon with a gratuity-free policy needs a different comparison.
1. Emerald Hair & Beauty: our first call for regular colour on a budget

1173 Queen Street East, Leslieville. Phone: 416-469-4292. Official menu · Book a consultation · Map
Emerald wins on the cheaper haircut add-on when you book colour. Roots start at $90. Add $35 for a short cut or $45 for medium-to-long hair. The blow-dry is already included.
The booking menu distinguishes root maintenance from its $115-and-up full colour service. Neither is a lightening appointment. Use the free consultation if you are unsure what to book.
Who we would ask about: Marina. She appears in current booking feedback for cuts and root colour, and the website describes substantial hairstyling experience. Check her availability on the Fresha listing.
The good: clear inclusions and the haircut add-on keep the total down. That is a stronger value case than cheap colour with separate charges for every finishing step.
Colour-brand check: we could not verify the current dye line from the public menu. Ask for the manufacturer and exact range. Do not confuse a stylist's past work with a colour company with the products used today.
Google reviews: good value still needs a careful haircut consultation
What customers like: the Google reviews for Emerald include repeat-client praise for Marina and Karina, friendly conversation and satisfying cuts and colour. The positive accounts support asking for a named stylist, rather than booking the first available chair.
What gives us pause: two detailed accounts, marked eight months and one year old when checked, describe unwanted layers, uneven sides or more length removed than requested. One also found the colour a little too blonde. The owner offered a complimentary adjustment in one reply. These are individual reports, but the repeated cut-shape concern is relevant.
Before booking: agree on the colour target, the shortest finished length and whether any layers are allowed. Ask to see the back and both sides before leaving.
Choose it for: a straightforward colour-maintenance appointment where keeping the regular bill manageable matters. Take a photo, mark the maximum length to remove, and confirm the dye before booking.

2. Lola: our first west-end call for colour, a cut and a proper finish

Ossington: 200 Ossington Avenue, 647-351-5652. Parkdale: 1336 Queen Street West, 416-516-9999. Services and prices · Booking policies
Lola is our strongest west-end starting point for this brief. The haircut includes washing and styling, the colour menu clearly separates roots from lightening, and there are two useful locations. For a regular appointment, those details matter more than a salon's fashionable address.
Root retouching is listed at $90–$150, with haircuts at $70–$108. Add the two and the menu range is $160–$258 before extras. These are starting rates across stylist levels, not a promise that every combination is available for every head of hair.
Full colour and the same haircut range work out to $190–$308 before extras. Skip the cheaper dry-cut price when comparing a complete visit: that service excludes washing and styling. Use the free consultation to get your actual total and ask which dye range will be used.
Google reviews: encouraging colour feedback, but confirm the booking
The Ossington review sample includes recent praise for listening, colour consultations and cuts suited to fine hair. Grant appears in accounts about both fine hair and blonde colour. These are leads for a consultation, not proof that the lowest menu price applies to him.
The useful caution is booking communication. Critical accounts include a disputed late arrival and an Instagram conversation that did not become a confirmed appointment. Get the date, branch, services and stylist confirmed through the salon's booking process. A message exchange is not enough.

At Lola Parkdale, recent praise covers colour, unhurried service and advice for styling at home. Hannah and Emily Grace are useful names to ask about. Older complaints focus on photo-assessment requirements and booking misunderstandings. One nine-month-old colour review liked the result but disliked the online booking process.
We did not establish a recurring recent technical complaint in the Parkdale sample. That is a limit of the sample, not a guarantee. Ask for an in-person consultation if sending photos and choosing services online feels awkward.
Choose Lola first for a west-end quote. Ossington suits the Dundas West area. The Queen Street branch is in Parkdale, useful for someone coming from Liberty Village. Confirm the branch, finished price and colour product before reserving.

3. The Cabinet: clear Queen West pricing, with recent colour complaints to weigh

577 Queen Street West, entrance on Portland Street. Phone: 647-344-3132. Service descriptions · Hourly prices · Team and rates
The Cabinet gives a useful answer to the complete-price question. Its two-hour express appointment covers solid root colour and a maintenance haircut, with consultation, washing and blow-drying. This is a routine upkeep service, not a full head of highlights or a major restyle.
At the published $90–$130 hourly rates, two hours work out to $180–$260, plus HST and an environmental service fee. The salon is tip-free. Ask for the fee amount and booked duration before comparing the final bill with another quote.
The lowest hourly rate does not apply to every stylist mentioned in a positive review. Extra time also changes the price. Get a quote for your actual stylist and colour plan, rather than multiplying the cheapest rate by an optimistic appointment length.
Google reviews: strong consultation praise, but recent follow-up concerns
The Cabinet Google reviews include recent praise for Hailey's cut and gloss, Frederic's consultations and realistic colour planning with Stacey. Other clients like knowing the hourly rate and not having to calculate a tip.
The critical sample is recent enough to take seriously. Accounts marked two to three months old describe unwanted colour tone, disappointing grey coverage, and insufficient booked time. One client says the appointment felt rushed and the hair was left damp. Another describes difficulty arranging a toner follow-up. These are customer accounts; several owner replies apologize.
Some of those complaints concern balayage or highlights, which are more involved than ordinary root colour. They do not establish that a routine root service will go wrong. They do make the written colour plan, appointment length and adjustment window important questions.
Choose The Cabinet for a clearly priced maintenance appointment near Queen and Portland if the consultation is convincing. We would get Lola's quote first and would not book a major colour change here on the strength of the overall rating alone. The exact dye range also needs confirming.

4. H&CO: a useful King West choice when Goldwell colour matters

569 King Street West, second floor. Phone: 647-247-2190. Service prices · About the salon · Booking
H&CO belongs on the King West shortlist. Its official Instagram profile identifies Goldwell colour, and the review sample includes long-term clients returning for both colour and cuts. Ask which Goldwell range suits your hair; the brand name alone does not answer that.
The price needs a careful check. Root colour starts at $100, and women's haircuts run $85–$190. That puts roots and a cut at $185 and up, but the public menu does not clearly settle whether a finished blow-dry is included in that combination.
Blow-drying is listed separately at $56–$80. If the lowest blow-dry charge is added to the lowest roots-and-cut combination, the floor becomes $241 before tax and extras. Do not assume it must be added, but do not budget for a complete $185 visit without confirmation either.
Google reviews: loyal clients, with fee communication worth checking
The H&CO review sample repeatedly praises June's listening and precise cuts. Recent feedback also includes a repeat client's colour-and-cut praise for Hayley. These are better consultation leads than asking for an unnamed stylist at the cheapest rate.
A year-old critical account praises the actual blowout but disputes the communication around a cancellation or rescheduling charge. The owner's reply says reminders and voicemail options were available. An older uneven-cut complaint drew an offer to inspect and adjust the result. We did not establish a recurring recent technical fault in the sample.
Choose H&CO for a King West consultation if a named colour brand and an ongoing stylist relationship matter more than the lowest price. Confirm the full finish, cancellation terms and stylist rate. Ask about step-free access if needed: the salon is on the second floor, and we have not verified an elevator route.
Map: H&CO, King West
5. Parlour: a low junior-tier price at Queen and Ossington, with a real trade-off

6 Ossington Avenue. Phone: 647-345-6663. Ossington salon · Dolly's service prices
Parlour deserves a mention because it publishes prices for individual stylists. One example is Dolly, listed as a junior stylist: a $66 haircut plus a $91-and-up root touch-up gives $157 and up. The root service covers an inch or less of regrowth.
That page includes washing and blow-dry styling with full services. Its cheaper T-zone touch-up is a different booking with only a quick dry. Full colour plus the same haircut starts at $174. These are Dolly's listed rates, not a salon-wide promise or the price for every stylist praised online.
Google reviews: choose the person, not just the entry price
The Parlour Google reviews include recent praise for Meladee's colour, Egor's realistic consultations and Darquise's calm, clear communication. Ask about their current services and prices if those qualities match what you need.
The junior-tier caution is concrete. Critical accounts describe unwanted thinning, uneven layers, more length removed than requested and appointments running late. One review posted about six months before our check concerns an older appointment with Dolly. The salon's reply acknowledges the junior stage and educator adjustments, while disputing parts of the account.
Other complaints concern complex lightening or colour correction. Those are not the same service as a routine root touch-up. Still, they reinforce the need to agree on the colour goal, finished length and adjustment process before starting.
We would not choose Parlour's cheapest tier for your first visit just to save a few dollars over Lola. Choose it if a consultation establishes that the particular stylist understands your hair and the complete quote works for you. Confirm the exact dye range, too.
Map: Parlour, Queen and Ossington
6. HairTree: a practical Midtown or Yorkville price check

Midtown: 2409 Yonge Street, 647-457-2409. Yorkville: 29 Bellair Street, 416-968-6277. Services · Locations · Midtown map
HairTree is the more straightforward price comparison near Yonge and Eglinton. Its posted women's haircut starts at $55 and includes shampoo and styling. Root colour starts at $100. Together, that is $155 and up. A full colour starts at $150, bringing the same combination to $205 and up.
The colour menu says haircuts are separate. That does not mean you should also add a standalone blow-dry: styling is already part of the haircut listed on the menu. Ask the branch to confirm that your combined booking uses those inclusions.
The good: it offers two useful locations within the core, with a low published haircut floor. Someone who spends time around Yonge and Eglinton can build a routine without crossing the city for each visit.
The drawback: a salon-wide starting price does not tell you the total with your chosen stylist, hair length and branch. The public information also does not settle which dye line will be used.
Ask for a stylist who regularly handles your hair texture and your intended result. For grey coverage, ask to see examples of the root area and hairline, not just long, curled hair photographed from behind.
Google reviews: check the branch and the stylist
Midtown positives: the Eglinton listing has recent praise for gentle, attentive appointments and cuts that match reference photos. One four-month-old account specifically praises the requested colour and cut. Midtown concerns: several critical accounts describe unwanted layers, thinning or a different shape. The salon apologizes and offers adjustments in some replies. A perm complaint concerns a different service from regular root colour.
Yorkville positives: the Bellair Street listing includes praise for Joy's consultation and checking the length during the cut, plus repeat visits to other stylists. Yorkville concerns: the low-rated sample includes uneven-cut complaints and a year-old account of a blow-dry and curl finish that did not meet expectations. Some owner replies offer a corrective visit.
Before booking: ask the stylist to explain the planned shape back to you. If you do not want thinning or short layers, say so explicitly. Praise for one branch or stylist is not a guarantee for another.
Choose it for: a Midtown consultation when your service budget is around $155–$200 before tax and tip. Get the branch-specific total before deciding it beats Emerald on value.

7. DSQUARE: promising Yonge and Eglinton prices, with one missing detail

2353 Yonge Street, second floor. Phone: 416-925-2161. Service prices · Stylist team · Map
DSQUARE deserves a call because its colour retouch starts at $75, and the menu lists $60 women's haircuts with Carla Aguirre and Hollie Dee. That gives a $135-and-up colour-and-cut subtotal.
But do not treat $135 as a confirmed complete appointment. The menu separately lists a $35-and-up wash and blow-dry and does not make the combined haircut finishing inclusion clear. If that is extra, the starting total becomes $170. Ask for the exact finished result you want, including any curling or flat-ironing.
The good: DSQUARE identifies Goldwell as a salon partner. Its team page also lets you compare named stylists rather than booking an anonymous slot. That is helpful when you want to keep seeing the same person.
The drawback: higher stylist tiers change the price substantially. The $60 haircut is not the price for every person on the team. The second-floor address also matters if stairs are inconvenient; an elevator route was not verified.
Google reviews: strong colour praise, but the stylist match matters
What customers like: the DSQUARE Google reviews repeatedly praise consultation, colour and polished finishes. Recent accounts mention Cassandra's blonde work and Carla's cuts and styling. One customer describes bringing her mother to Nick for a successful colour-and-cut appointment. Those are useful leads, but they do not establish that each stylist charges the cheapest menu rate.
What gives us pause: a year-old account describes a curly cut becoming too short and highlights missing the intended tone. The owner apologized. Older complaints include disappointing blow-dries and scheduling problems; some replies say the stylist involved has left. A years-old finishing dispute is not proof of today's package rules.
Before booking: confirm the stylist's experience with your texture and get the finished price in writing. Ask whether the quote includes the smooth blow-dry or curls you actually want.
New colour clients must contact the salon by phone or in person. Ask Carla or Hollie for a complete quote, confirm the exact colour range, and choose DSQUARE if the finished total and stylist fit are better than your other Midtown quote.
Map: DSQUARE, Yonge and Eglinton
8. Hair Play: a $150 St. Clair West option to check carefully

638 St. Clair Avenue West. Phone: 416-656-6600. Cut and colour menu · Contact · Map
Hair Play lists a $70-and-up wash, cut and blow-dry, plus $80-and-up colour touch-ups. The combination starts at $150. Full-head colour starts at $110, making that combination $180 and up.
This is a useful alternative if St. Clair West is easier than Leslieville. The finishing inclusion is clear in the haircut description, which makes its menu more useful than an unexplained “cut from” price.
The good: the price structure is simple, and the salon offers a free consultation. Azita came up in our local research as a stylist to ask about. Use that as a starting lead and ask about her experience with the specific colour and cut you want.
The drawback: parts of the website and gallery are older. These are the prices posted when we checked, not proof of a recently revised menu. Confirm them by phone before travelling. The product page lists several brands, but it does not clearly identify the exact dye for your appointment.
Google reviews: a sharply mixed recent sample
What customers like: the Hair Play Google listing includes praise for Azita's colour, listening and friendly service. Several accounts describe happy repeat visits or bringing a family member.
What gives us pause: the critical sample includes complaints about too much length being removed, uneven shape and an unsatisfactory response when concerns were raised. Several positive and negative accounts fall in the same two-month-old period. We cannot establish how independent those reports are or turn them into a complaint rate. One detailed length complaint is tagged as a children's cut, so it does not establish an adult colour-service problem.
Our take: the mixed feedback makes a consultation more important here. If the stylist does not clearly agree on the finished length and colour plan, choose another salon. The posted price alone is not enough reason to book.
Choose it only after: a consultation that leaves you confident about the stylist, length and colour plan. The price is useful, but the mixed recent feedback keeps it below our first choices.
Map: Hair Play, St. Clair West
9. N15: a clear downtown menu with a low starting stylist tier

831 Bay Street: 416-615-0088. 643 Bay Street: 647-748-8820. Service menu · Hair salon locations · 831 Bay map
N15 is worth comparing if downtown convenience matters. Root colour starts at $99 and a cut and style at the Stylist I or II tier is $64. That makes $163 and up. Full colour starts at $138, giving a $202-and-up combination at the same haircut tier.
The colour menu includes blow-drying and styling. Ask whether a combined appointment changes the haircut charge; we have not assumed an unpublished discount.
The good: prices are broken down by stylist level. That gives you a real choice between the entry price and paying more for a particular person. Both Bay Street hair salons fit a downtown routine.
The drawback: longer hair and higher stylist tiers can lift the bill. A treatment brand such as Milbon, or an Olaplex add-on, is not the name of the dye. Confirm the colour line separately.
Make sure you book a hair salon branch. N15 also has other beauty services and locations; a lash appointment at Queen Street is not the same thing as a hair appointment on Bay.
Google reviews: two branches, with different useful leads
831 Bay Street: the College and Bay reviews include praise for detailed consultations, checking before a big cut and making requested adjustments before the client leaves. Critical accounts include unwanted thinning, short layers and uneven or poorly blended cuts. Several owner replies apologize or invite direct contact. Agree on the dry finished shape, not just the number of centimetres to remove.
643 Bay Street: the Dundas and Bay reviews contain particularly relevant colour leads. One recent client praises a full colour and cut with Minnie. Another praises Yota for highlights with grey coverage. A detailed account describes Chiaki giving a mother who was growing out her grey hair a cut she loved. Ask whether these stylists currently work at this branch and what they charge.
The Dundas caution: other accounts report cut-shape mismatches. One six-month-old review describes an unsuccessful bleach-root correction; the owner apologizes for not achieving the desired result over two visits. That concerns lightening, not ordinary grey-root dye. For a complex change, ask who handles corrections and what the follow-up policy covers.
Choose it for: a clear downtown price comparison, especially if the lower haircut tier suits your needs. Ask to see the selected stylist's work with your texture rather than assuming a salon's overall portfolio belongs to every stylist.
Map: N15, 831 Bay Street
Map: N15, 643 Bay Street
10. The Manor: our stronger pick when knowing the colour brand matters most

659 Mount Pleasant Road, south of Eglinton. Phone: 416-901-1412. Services and prices · Consultation policy · Map
The Manor is a more expensive but better-documented colour option. Its colour page names Goldwell as its main colour line. That answers a question the cheaper salons' public menus often leave open.
Roots start at $100 and the women's wash, cut and style starts at $100. The combination is therefore $200 and up. Do not automatically add its colour-only blow-dry charge to a haircut that already includes styling.
The good: the menu defines the root service as covering up to 1.5 inches of regrowth. It also offers a $30 colour consultation. That fee can be applied to a future service booked within four weeks of the original consultation, according to the salon's consultation page.
The drawback: this is not a $200 final bill once HST and any tip are included. More regrowth can mean more colour charges. The salon also ties its colour-longevity guarantee to buying recommended products, so ask what the policy covers before adding retail products to your budget.
Goldwell is useful evidence of a professional colour system. It is not proof that every formula is right for every head of hair. Ask which Goldwell range the stylist proposes and why it suits your coverage goal.
Google reviews: loyal colour clients, with booking concerns to check
What customers like: the Manor Google reviews repeatedly mention Lucy and Sonia for colour, and Amber and Amanda for cuts. Recent accounts praise repeat results, curly or wavy hair work and a warm atmosphere. That is more useful than a high star score alone.
What gives us pause: the critical sample leans towards older booking and communication disputes. In one year-old account, a family was told on the day that the booked junior stylist was not suitable for the daughter's dense, curly hair. The owner says a senior stylist was needed for the right result. That is a reason to settle the stylist match and price in advance, not evidence that the salon cannot cut curls.
Before booking: describe your texture, ask who will do the colour and cut, and confirm each person's rate. Do this before taking time off or arranging a long journey.
Choose it for: a considered Midtown consultation when you would rather pay more for clearer product information. If the quote rises well beyond your comfort level, return to Emerald or HairTree with the same list of questions.
Map: The Manor, Mount Pleasant
11. Joseph Head Hair Colour: worth a consultation for a more involved colour plan

404 Queen Street East. Phone: 647-760-7463. Services and FAQ · Contact and booking · Map
Joseph Head is a useful step up when the question is more than “please cover my roots.” Its about page describes a colour-focused practice run by Lena and Joseph, with formula notes kept as the work develops over repeat visits.
A root service starts at $110 and includes washing, blow-drying and styling. Add the $70-and-up scissors haircut for medium or long hair and the starting total is $180. Full colour with that cut starts at $245.
The good: its portfolio shows a broad range of colour work, including different blondes and grey blending. The salon offers a complimentary consultation, which is the right route for lightening, correcting old colour or changing how grey grows in.
The drawback: the root price is not a blonde-transformation quote. Full highlights start at $205 before the haircut, and you still need to confirm any toner or extra work. The public service menu does not name the current dye line. The salon also states that appointment deposits are non-refundable and sets a 24-hour cancellation policy.
Its approach is collaborative, so ask who will do the colour and who will cut and finish your hair if continuity matters to you.
Google reviews: consultation is the clear strength
What customers like: the Joseph Head Google reviews repeatedly praise the team for discussing the colour goal, giving realistic advice and making clients comfortable. Recent accounts include happy colour-and-cut visits, highlights and long-term clients returning to Joe and Lena.
What gives us pause: we did not find a recurring recent technical complaint in the sample inspected. One short recent review questions the value without explaining the service; the owner says they could not identify the appointment and asks the reviewer to get in touch. That is too little detail to judge the work.
Our take: the stronger concern for this guide is the actual bill. Use the consultation for a thoughtful colour plan, but get the whole quote first. Good reviews do not make a complex colour service inexpensive.
Choose it for: a colour consultation with a clear long-term goal. For simple routine coverage, Emerald's lower starting total is the better first comparison.
Map: Joseph Head Hair Colour, Queen East
12. Kismet: compare the final bill, because the core salon is tip-free

276 Carlaw Avenue, Unit 208A, Leslieville. Phone: 647-748-7263. Services and stylist prices · Map
Kismet is not the cheapest menu here, but its gratuity-free policy makes a fair comparison more interesting. There is one important exception: guest stylists who rent a chair can have different pricing and tipping policies.
Root colour starts at $123 and includes the finish. Using Alexis's haircut menu, a short scissor cut adds $93, a bob or lob adds $111, and a long cut adds $121. That produces examples of $216+, $234+ and $244+. Confirm the colour rate for the selected stylist before treating those sums as your quote.
For perspective, $216 plus HST is $244.08 where the gratuity-free policy applies. A $200 appointment elsewhere becomes $256 if you choose a 15% pre-tax tip. The higher menu price is not always the higher final bill.
The good: the menu explains haircut lengths and stylist differences. The studio's published approach to natural colour and wearable cuts is a sensible fit for someone who wants to maintain the result at home.
The drawback: this still sits above the cheapest options. Long or dense hair costs more, and you must confirm the actual stylist's policy. The website names Davines hair products, but does not clearly establish the precise dye range. Ask about step-free access to Unit 208A if you need it.
Google reviews: a strong lead for a calmer appointment
What customers like: the Kismet Google reviews repeatedly praise Nicole for explaining the process, listening and looking after clients through different cuts and colours, including root touch-ups. The calm studio and Alexis's thoughtful service also come up. One client with very fine hair praises the lift and volume from her cut.
What gives us pause: sorting by lowest rating surfaced a three-year-old account of a cut being shorter than intended, followed by positive accounts in the visible sample. The owner apologized. We did not establish a recurring recent complaint in this sample.
Our take: this is a stronger shortlist choice if a quiet-feeling appointment matters and the higher quote fits your budget. Still agree on the length and confirm your stylist's rate. The reviews do not make every stylist part of the same price example.
Choose it for: a small-studio appointment when you like the stylist's work and want a clear final bill. Do the after-tax comparison before ruling it out on the starting price alone.

The GBX student menu lists a $44-and-up root touch-up and a $22-and-up haircut. The live booking description includes a natural blow-dry with the root service. Its long haircut also includes washing, conditioning and a natural blow-dry.
That gives a $66-and-up starting combination, before any extra product or styling work. Full colour plus the same cut starts at $77. Ask whether the finish you want is included: “natural blow-dry” is not automatically a round-brush blowout with curled ends.
The good: the saving is substantial. The booking page states that students work under a licensed educator's supervision. This is a real option for a reader whose budget rules out the other salons.
The drawback: it is a teaching appointment. Allow more time and confirm the duration rather than squeezing it between errands. A student is also not the same long-term choice as an established stylist you hope to see for years. We could not verify the exact dye line from the public service description.
Select Student Services, not the professional studio, in the booking system. Confirm the location in your appointment details.
Google reviews: the saving comes with booking and consistency trade-offs
What customers like: the Glassbox Education Google listing includes explicit praise for student appointments, kind staff and supervisors checking the work. Other recent accounts praise cuts, colour and useful home-care advice. Not every review identifies whether the service was by a student or a professional, so do not treat the whole listing as a score for the cheapest appointment.
What gives us pause: critical accounts describe cuts not matching the requested shape, difficulty getting a walk-in and last-minute booking changes. In a recent reply, the school says student appointments are typically booking about two weeks ahead. It also says it has added front-desk support and reserve students. Those replies acknowledge practical issues without proving every appointment has them.
Before travelling: reserve Student Services, confirm the address and allow extra time. For colour and a cut together, ask whether one student or two providers will handle the booking, and what happens if a student is absent. Do not rely on a walk-in for an important appointment.
Choose it for: the lowest price when you are comfortable with supervised training. For a first visit where speed, confidence and continuity come first, spend more on a salon consultation.

14. GOA: four useful locations, but choose the branch and colourist carefully
GOA deserves a comparison because it has current locations in Koreatown, Midtown, Richmond West and near Wellesley. It does not replace Emerald or Lola as our first routine-colour enquiry. The branch reviews are mixed, and recent complaints at Eglinton concern the very colour work this guide is about.
The official booking system separates Essential, Signature and Premium cuts. The starting Essential cut is $65. Do not assume that buying the cheapest cut and the cheapest colour automatically gives you every finishing step.
Richmond: the clearest complete-price example

400 Richmond Street West. Phone: 416-596-6638. Richmond services and booking
The current Richmond booking menu lists roots from $100, excluding a cut. The $85 Signature cut explicitly includes shampoo, conditioner, a hair mask and a blow-dry. That makes $185 and up a useful complete-service comparison, subject to the chosen stylist and confirmation that both starting rates apply.
The $65 Essential cut has less explicit finishing information. We would not present $165 as a confirmed roots, cut and blow-dry package. There is also a separately priced blow-dry, so have the salon explain exactly which services it is combining.
The Richmond Google sample includes recent praise for consultations and cuts with Shiho, Rira, Hazel and Judy. Ruby appears in a colour-planning account. Critical accounts describe unwanted layers, too much length removed and rushed finishing, including hair left damp. Some owner replies apologize and invite follow-up.
Choose Richmond for a named stylist after a clear consultation. Use 400 Richmond, the current official address, rather than an older listing showing 388.
Eglinton: a convenient location that we would rank below HairTree for a first colour visit

2485 Yonge Street. Phone: 416-322-6333. Eglinton services and booking
There is positive Google feedback about Erin's colour work, Bella testing a colour plan before proceeding, and Shanta's attentive cuts. But the critical sample includes two detailed colour accounts marked two and five months old.
One describes a brown root touch-up that did not match the requested shade and looked patchy after correction attempts. Other accounts describe unwanted layers and poor finishing. Several owner replies apologize and invite contact. These are customer reports, not independently verified events, but they are too relevant to ignore.
Call HairTree first for a routine Midtown colour quote. Use GOA Eglinton only after a convincing consultation with a specific colourist. Confirm the dye range, target shade and correction policy. We have not assumed Richmond's combined price applies here.
Koreatown: a useful mother-and-daughter lead on Bloor

714 Bloor Street West. Phone: 416-516-9292. Koreatown services and booking
One four-month-old Google account describes Luna taking time with the reviewer's mother's colour, cut and treatment. Emily appears in more than one positive account about cuts, colour and clear explanations. Those are useful names to ask about.
A four-month-old balayage-and-cut complaint describes an unwanted lighter tone, too much length removed and difficulty arranging follow-up. The salon apologizes and invites direct contact. A separate perm-duration dispute concerns a different service from ordinary root colour.
Ask about Emily or Luna if Bloor is the easiest repeat trip. Get this branch's full quote and agree on the finished length before work starts. A good family-appointment story is a lead, not a guarantee.
Wellesley: detailed stylist praise alongside cut and booking concerns

593 Yonge Street, Unit 3. Phone: 416-927-9900. Wellesley services and booking
The Wellesley Google sample includes praise for Jihye checking the cut as it develops and for Miji's colour advice. Other clients describe careful length checks. Their rates still need confirming.
Critical accounts describe uneven cuts, a different shape than requested and rushed service. One recent colour client says the included haircut almost got missed and found the bill unclear. The salon apologizes for service and pricing confusion. That does not establish overcharging: service inclusions and tax treatment must be checked before comparing totals.
Choose a particular stylist after a consultation, rather than an unnamed first opening. For a clearer published downtown price comparison, get N15's quote too.

15. CL Salon: clear finishing inclusions near Bathurst and Bloor

771 Bathurst Street. Phone: 416-531-6127. Rates and booking policies
CL Salon's menu is useful because it spells out washing and styling. Roots for one to two inches of regrowth start at $130. A haircut starts at $85, or $90 with Amanda. The regular combination is $215 and up, or $220 using Amanda's starting haircut rate.
This is not the cheapest shortlist option. Long or thick hair can cost more, and full colour is listed at $160–$280 before a haircut. Ask for the current dye range rather than treating a named straightening or haircare product as the dye.
The Google sample includes recent praise for Jared's curly-hair consultations, Amanda adjusting layers, Karson checking in and Samantha's cuts. A longer-term client also praises Samantha's colour work.
The cautions include unwanted thinning and cut-shape complaints. A year-old red-colour account describes a darker result than wanted and uneven roots; the owner offered a correction. A waiting-time complaint also drew an apology. Confirm the goal and adjustment process before the appointment.
The menu lists a free 15-minute walk-in consultation. Colour deposits are $75 and haircut deposits $20, credited to the service. Read the 48-hour cancellation policy and two-week correction terms before paying.
Choose CL when the location and stylist fit justify the higher total. If the goal is the lowest repeat cost for ordinary roots, compare Emerald, HairTree or Lola first.

16. LES Studio: an inclusive choice with a real price gap between branches
LES uses gender-neutral services, and its official website describes a queer, women- and immigrant-owned studio. The appointment should be based on your hair and the work needed. But do not assume the two branches have the same starting price.
Ossington: the lower regular-cut floor

827 College Street. Phone: 647-948-7735. Ossington booking menu
The checked regular-cut prices start at $59 short, $70 medium and $100 long. Roots start at $100. That gives menu-floor combinations of $159, $170 and $200, before HST and extras. Haircuts include washing and styling.
Cheaper apprentice cut listings are separate. We have not assumed an apprentice cut can be combined with a colour service at the lowest rate. The consultation needs to establish who does each part and the complete bill.
Recent Ossington Google reviews praise Andrea for a first colour-and-cut visit and for fine-hair work. Bri appears in creative-colour and home-styling accounts. The critical sample includes unwanted short or heavy cut shapes and resistance to requested adjustments. A recent rescheduling complaint drew an owner apology citing unforeseen circumstances.
Choose Ossington as the first LES price comparison. It is a serious alternative for an inclusive appointment, provided the consultation establishes the shape, maintenance effort and total you want.
Bathurst: pay more for the right person, not an assumed shared price

392 College Street. Phone: 647-948-7735. Bathurst booking menu
Bathurst's checked regular-cut floors are $100 short, $115 medium and $130 long, with roots from $110. The starting arithmetic becomes $210, $225 or $240. Again, the consultation confirms whether the lowest rates apply to your combination.
The Bathurst Google sample praises a welcoming atmosphere and listening during cuts. Kyler's pixie work and a cut with Amore appear in recent accounts. A seven-month-old curly-fade review describes a shorter, uneven result; this is a different service from root colour. A recent cancellation claim is disputed by the salon.
Choose Bathurst for a particular stylist or the easier trip. On starting price alone, Ossington wins.
Both locations require a colour consultation on a prior day. The standard root description covers permanent or demi-permanent colour for grey coverage or blending, with up to three inches of regrowth. It does not cover bleaching the roots.
Read the LES policies before paying: a $100 colour booking fee is credited to the appointment, and changes need at least 24 hours by phone or email. The policy also describes one complimentary adjustment booked within seven days. These rules matter if your schedule is hard to predict.
LES advertises monthly pay-what-you-can haircut sessions. We did not confirm the next date, available slots or a colour offer. Ask about the next event; do not treat it as the everyday colour-and-cut price.

17. Marca College: a budget option if you can go farther east

2902 Danforth Avenue. Phone: 1-833-627-2248. Student salon prices · Toronto campus
Marca is outside the original Liberty Village-to-Leslieville search area. Add the travel time before deciding the lower menu is a saving. Students perform services under licensed-instructor supervision.
Roots with a blow-dry are listed at $55. A haircut is $22, while cut-and-style is $35. Ask whether the $22 cut can be added to the root service for a $77 subtotal. That combination is not confirmed, so it should not be presented as a booked package price.
Full colour with a blow-dry starts at $85, and extra colour product is listed at $30. Confirm the full service and product total. The campus is cashless and lists Visa, Mastercard and debit.
The Toronto campus Google sample includes recent colour praise for Rukiye and a good mother-and-child haircut account involving Alma. Students graduate, so names in reviews are not a promise of future availability.
The critical evidence is useful too. A recent balayage reviewer describes an unwanted result, then explicitly praises a free correction by Clarissa and Hope. Another reports a wait for an instructor and a shorter cut than requested. A year-old roots-and-blow-dry account describes a long, uncomfortable appointment. Ask how supervision works and who handles a problem before booking.
The Toronto page lists hair-salon hours Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Its Thursday evening hours are for esthetics, so do not assume you can book hair then.
Choose Marca if you have the time, accept a teaching appointment and want to compare the saving. For a student option inside the original search area, call Glassbox Education first. Skip either school if you need a fast appointment with the same established stylist every visit.

How to choose good colour without paying for things you do not need

Ask about the dye, the result and the plan
A brand name is a useful starting point. It is not the whole answer. A salon can stock expensive shampoo while using a different colour system. A treatment such as Olaplex is not a dye, and a retailer's wall of products does not tell you what will be mixed for your appointment.
Goldwell's professional Topchic information describes a permanent colour system designed for grey coverage. That does not establish which Goldwell range a particular salon will use. The practical question is: “Which brand and range would you use on my hair, and what result should I expect at the roots?”
For full grey coverage, ask about the hairline and any resistant areas. For a softer blend, say that you do not need every grey hair hidden. Those are different goals. A useful stylist will explain the difference in appearance, maintenance and price before picking a service.
If a salon cannot clearly explain the product or the plan, keep looking. A vague promise of “premium dye” is not enough reason to pay more.
Roots, all-over colour and highlights are different purchases
Root colour deals with new growth. It is the natural starting comparison when you like your existing colour and want to maintain it.
Full colour applies one colour through more of the hair. It does not automatically include removing old dye or making dark hair blonde. Emerald's menu makes that limit explicit.
Highlights, bleach and grey blending can involve a different plan. Ask for a separate total covering the lightening, toner if needed, treatment, cut and finish. Do not compare a root-touch-up price with someone's full blonde appointment and assume one salon is overcharging.
If you already have highlights and want them maintained, start with a consultation. If you want to keep natural grey and just have a great shape and finish, there is no reason to buy colour at all. Ask for a cut-and-style quote instead.
A good appointment should leave you with hair you can manage
Bring two or three reference photos, including one that shows what you do not want. Be specific: “keep enough length to tuck behind my ears” is more useful than “just a tidy-up.” Agree on the shortest layer and the amount to remove before the scissors come out.
Explain your real routine. If you spend five minutes on your hair, say so. If you wear glasses, usually air-dry, or do not own a round brush, include that. A style that only works after half an hour of salon finishing is poor value for a reader who will not repeat that routine.
Ask to see a result on hair with a similar texture, density and length. A photo of thick, waist-length waves tells you little about a fine bob or a short curly cut. Age alone does not answer any of those questions.
Keep the repeat cost under control
Ask for two prices: the first appointment and the ordinary maintenance visit. A correction or major change can cost more at the start. You also do not necessarily need a haircut every time you colour your roots.
For a simple illustration, eight $90 root visits and four $35 haircut add-ons total $860 before tax and extras. Adding that haircut at every visit would total $1,000. This is arithmetic using Emerald's starting menu, not a recommended appointment frequency. Agree on the timing your chosen style actually needs.
Ask whether any toner, treatment or extra product is required, optional or already included. An optional treatment should not quietly become a surprise at checkout. If a salon suggests a series of expensive visits, get the whole plan priced before starting.
Do not mistake “ammonia-free” for allergy-free
Tell the salon about any previous dye reaction before booking. Health Canada advises following hair-dye safety instructions and doing the required skin test each time, even after previous use without a reaction. Ask how far ahead the salon needs you to attend for its testing procedure.
If you have had a reaction, get medical advice before another application. A professional brand, an expensive service or an ammonia-free label does not settle that concern.
Choose the easiest trip for repeat appointments

The best-priced salon is less useful if every visit becomes a tiring cross-city trip. For someone splitting time between downtown and Yonge and Eglinton, compare the best quote near each place you regularly spend time. Compare both the bill and the journey you are willing to repeat.
Every salon profile above has an embedded Google Map and a link to open the location for directions. Lola, HairTree, N15 and LES have separate maps for both branches. GOA has a map for each of its four locations. These maps mark street addresses, not neighbourhood boundaries or exact salon entrances. For St. Clair West, check Hair Play's location rather than assuming it is beside the Yonge Street subway.
Leave room for a slow cross-town streetcar trip if you choose an east-west journey. Driving instead? Check the parking signs and time limits against the full appointment length, including processing and finishing.
Step-free entrances, elevators, washrooms and backwash-chair comfort were not verified at every salon. If any matter to you, ask directly. Being 65 does not mean you need any particular accommodation, but a booking should fit your actual comfort needs.
If you are making a day of it and need step-free places to go afterwards, our accessible Toronto guide offers ideas to check alongside the salon's own access details.
Questions to ask before booking colour, a cut and a style

Which Toronto salon should I contact first for affordable root colour, a cut and a blow-dry?
Emerald is our first value enquiry because its published colour-plus-cut structure includes the blow-dry and uses a reduced haircut add-on. Lola is our west-end starting point for Ossington or Parkdale, and HairTree is a useful Midtown alternative. Confirm the stylist, dye line and complete quote before choosing.
Can I keep the final bill under $200?
Yes, several starting-price combinations can fit, but the quote needs to include your length and any extras. A $155 service becomes $198.40 with HST and an optional 15% pre-tax tip. Tell the salon whether your limit includes tax and tip.
Which salon clearly identifies a professional colour brand?
The Manor names Goldwell as its main colour line, and H&CO identifies Goldwell colour on its official Instagram profile. DSQUARE lists Goldwell as a partner, which is less specific about the exact product for your appointment. Ask for the range and why the stylist recommends it for your hair.
Do I need permanent dye to cover grey hair?
Not always. Some demi-permanent colour systems can blend grey; Goldwell's Colorance range is one example. For full coverage, ask the colourist which product can deliver the result on your hair and how the regrowth will look. Choose by the result you want, not by your age.
Does “colour and cut” always include the blow-dry?
No. Some menus explicitly include it, while others list finishing separately. Ask for the total covering colour, shampoo, haircut and your chosen finish. Say whether you want a simple dry, a smooth blowout, volume, curls or a diffuser finish.
What should I book if I want to go blonde or blend my grey?
Book a colour consultation first. Describe your current colour, previous dye and the result you want, then ask for a complete first-visit and maintenance quote. A basic root-touch-up booking is not a safe assumption for a major colour change.
Are student salons a sensible way to save?
GBX offers a much lower starting price with educator supervision. Marca College is another budget comparison farther east, but its combined roots-and-cut total needs confirming. Choose a school if you are comfortable with a teaching setting and a longer appointment. If your main priority is a quick visit with the same established stylist each time, choose one of the regular salons instead.
What exact words should I use when calling?
Say: “I'd like colour, a haircut and a finished blow-dry in one visit. My hair is [length and texture], and I want [root coverage, a colour change or a softer grey blend]. Which stylist would you suggest, which colour brand and range would you use, and what is the full price before tax? Please include any toner, extra product or styling charges, and tell me whether I need a consultation or skin test first.”
Then add your spending limit and the maximum length you want removed. Call Emerald first for value. Compare Lola for the west end, HairTree for Midtown convenience, or The Manor for clearer colour-product information. Choose the stylist who gives you a specific plan and a complete price you can comfortably repeat.
