Thanksgiving in Canada is Monday, October 12, 2026. The long weekend runs from Saturday, October 10 to Monday, October 12, for people who have Monday off. The date is on the Government of Canada’s 2026 holiday calendar.

Our pick is Sunday dinner, with Monday left for travel or a quiet day, if your group’s work schedules allow it. A shared meal where everyone brings a dish is the best low-cost alternative. Buy the essentials before Monday. Holiday pay rules and store closures are two different things, and neither works the same way across Canada.

Dates and linked holiday notices checked October 9, 2026. Store hours can still change.

Date What to plan
Friday, October 9 Finish errands that need a staffed bank branch. Confirm food pickups and travel bookings.
Saturday, October 10 Do the main grocery shop and collect any advance orders.
Sunday, October 11 Our preferred day for dinner, if everyone is free. Check Sunday pickup hours.
Monday, October 12 Thanksgiving Day. Use holiday store hours and the timetable for your actual route.

If you only need local openings, go straight to what’s open and closed in Toronto on Thanksgiving.

Is Thanksgiving a statutory holiday everywhere in Canada?

No. Thanksgiving is a holiday under federal labour standards and under the employment standards laws of nine provinces and territories. It is not a general paid holiday under the employment standards laws of the four Atlantic provinces.

That doesn’t tell you whether a particular person has Monday off. Eligibility rules, the type of job, an employment agreement and federal coverage can change the answer. A statutory holiday can also be a working day with holiday pay or another entitlement.

The table below covers employment holiday status. It is not a store-opening calendar. Each province or territory links to its own rules.

Province or territory Thanksgiving employment holiday?
British Columbia Yes, for eligible employees covered by the provincial rules.
Alberta Yes, a general holiday. Eligibility rules apply.
Saskatchewan Yes, a public holiday. Eligibility rules apply.
Manitoba Yes, a general holiday. Eligibility rules apply.
Ontario Yes, a public holiday. Eligibility rules and job exceptions apply.
Quebec Yes, a statutory holiday. Eligibility rules apply.
New Brunswick Not one of the province’s general paid holidays.
Nova Scotia Not one of the province’s general paid holidays. Retail closing rules are separate.
Prince Edward Island Not one of the province’s eight paid holidays.
Newfoundland and Labrador Not a general paid holiday. It is a shop-closing holiday.
Yukon Yes, for eligible employees covered by territorial rules.
Northwest Territories Yes, a statutory holiday. Eligibility rules apply.
Nunavut Yes, a general holiday. Eligibility rules apply.

For a federally regulated job, use the federal general holiday rules, even if you live in an Atlantic province. Confirm everyone’s work schedule before choosing the dinner time.

Are grocery stores and malls open on Thanksgiving?

There is no reliable Canada-wide yes or no. Shopping before Monday is the safest plan, especially when your meal needs a particular ingredient. An open convenience store is a poor backup for a full Thanksgiving grocery list.

Quebec allows Thanksgiving shopping. The province’s 2026 holiday opening rules permit normal opening hours on October 12 for general retail, small and large grocery stores, and SAQ stores. Each business still chooses its actual hours.

For a confirmed example, Montreal Eaton Centre lists 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, October 12. Don’t cancel a Montreal shopping plan because you’ve seen a blanket claim that Quebec malls must close.

Ontario has Thanksgiving retail closures, with exceptions. The provincial retail rules and Toronto’s holiday shopping rules allow some businesses to open. An exemption gives a shop permission to open. It doesn’t promise that the shop will open. Check the exact location before heading out.

Atlantic Canada has an easy trap: Thanksgiving can close shops even where it isn’t a general paid employment holiday. New Brunswick’s day-of-rest rules, Nova Scotia’s retail calendar, PEI’s retail holiday law and Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2026 shop-closing notice all cover Thanksgiving. Exempt businesses can operate. Do the main shop before Monday.

Manitoba no longer has a province-wide ban on Sunday and holiday retail opening. Its shopping-hours guidance says municipal rules can still apply. In Manitoba and elsewhere, use the store’s dated holiday listing rather than its usual Monday hours.

Buy drinks ahead, too

Ontario’s LCBO closes on Thanksgiving. The Beer Store has confirmed its Ontario retail stores will close on October 12, 2026. Some other licensed sellers offer a backup, but the Ontario alcohol retailer map doesn’t guarantee holiday hours or a particular product.

In Nova Scotia, buy drinks before Monday. See the NSLC note below before relying on a holiday opening.

British Columbia needs a branch check. BCLIQUOR’s Walnut Grove store lists 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., while its SFU store lists closed for October 12. One chain can have different answers on the same day.

Mail, banking and transit need separate checks

Canada Post will have no regular mail collection or delivery on Monday, October 12. A postal counter inside a private business can follow different opening hours. Check Canada Post’s holiday operations before making a special trip.

For staffed banking, finish time-sensitive branch errands before the weekend. TD Canada Trust’s 2026 holiday schedule says all its branches are closed on October 12. Use your own bank’s Canadian branch page to check its arrangements. American holiday calendars give different answers.

Transit can run on a Saturday schedule, a Sunday schedule or no service at all. These are confirmed examples for Monday, October 12, 2026:

Service Thanksgiving plan
TTC in Toronto Holiday service based on Sunday schedules, with earlier starts on some routes. Check your route.
GO Transit Saturday schedule. Some routes do not run on weekends.
TransLink in Metro Vancouver Bus, SkyTrain and SeaBus use Sunday/holiday service. West Coast Express does not run.
Tidal Transit in Nova Scotia No service on October 12. Service resumes Tuesday, October 13.

Check the return trip before accepting a late dinner invitation. A ride out is not proof that there will be a ride home.

Local details still to check

As of October 9, we have not verified dated 2026 Thanksgiving notices for Montreal’s STM, REM and exo, or Halifax Transit. The exact service pattern is unconfirmed here. For Montreal-area trips, exo’s trip planner includes trains, the metro, buses and the REM. Enter October 12. For Halifax, check Halifax Transit’s current route timetable. Do not carry a Sunday schedule over from another city or an older article.

NSLC closures need a fresh check. Its indexed 2026–27 calendar listed stores as closed on Thanksgiving, but the linked document was no longer available on October 9. Closure is expected, with moderate confidence, until a current notice confirms it. A newer store notice could change the answer. Use the NSLC store finder before relying on a Monday purchase.

The same applies to school calendars, libraries, pools, waste pickup and local offices. Check the specific board or facility. A provincial employment holiday list is not a complete public-service schedule.

Keep the dinner smaller than the shopping list

Our pick for a group is a Sunday meal where each person brings something. It spreads the work and lets guests choose what they can afford. Set the menu together so the host doesn’t end up with four desserts and no dinner.

For one or two people, skip the whole turkey unless you want the leftovers and have room to store them. Choose a smaller main, a vegetable dish and a dessert you’ll actually finish. A roast chicken, a vegetarian pie or a small prepared meal is enough.

Health Canada’s turkey and lentil shepherd’s pie is another option if you want a turkey dish without roasting a whole bird. It uses ground turkey, so it is a different shopping list from a turkey roast.

If you choose frozen meat, allow time to thaw it safely. Health Canada says the refrigerator is the safest place to defrost food. Don’t leave a turkey on the counter to thaw.

In Toronto, our guides to Thanksgiving dinner for one or two and a first Thanksgiving on a budget help narrow the choices. Check order deadlines before paying. A holiday menu can still be online after advance orders have closed.

If cooking isn’t your plan, choose a walk and a meal you like. Our Thanksgiving alone in Toronto guide has local ideas, and these fall-colour walks by TTC keep the day possible without a car. Check that day’s transit service before setting out.

When is Canadian Thanksgiving in 2026?

Canadian Thanksgiving is Monday, October 12, 2026. The long weekend is October 10 to 12 for people who have Monday off.

Is Canadian Thanksgiving on the same date as American Thanksgiving?

No. Canada’s Thanksgiving is October 12 in 2026. The United States celebrates on Thursday, November 26, according to the U.S. federal holiday calendar. Check the country when looking up travel plans or store hours.

Should Thanksgiving dinner be on Sunday or Monday?

Choose the day that works for your guests. Our pick is Sunday, October 11, when everyone’s schedule allows it, because Monday stays free for travel and cleanup. The official holiday date does not set your dinner date.

Is Thanksgiving a holiday in Quebec?

Yes. Thanksgiving, also called Action de grâce, is a statutory employment holiday in Quebec, with eligibility rules. Retail opening is a separate matter: the province permits normal shopping hours on October 12, 2026.

Do people in Atlantic Canada get Thanksgiving off?

Some do. Thanksgiving is not a general paid holiday under the employment standards laws of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island or Newfoundland and Labrador. Federal rules, employment agreements and individual workplaces can still provide the day off or holiday benefits. Ask your employer rather than assuming.

Can I buy groceries on Thanksgiving Monday?

That depends on the province, local rules and exact store. Quebec allows normal opening, while Ontario and the Atlantic provinces have Thanksgiving retail restrictions with exemptions. Confirm the branch’s October 12 hours, or finish your main shop over the weekend.

Do I need to serve turkey for Thanksgiving?

No. Make a meal that fits your budget, appetite and guests. For a small household, a smaller main and one good dessert are easier to manage than a whole turkey and several days of leftovers.
