Where to Buy a Classic Birthday Cake in Toronto

La Rocca’s Birthday Confetti Cake is a straightforward choice for a small party. Check the serving size before ordering. Photo: La Rocca Creative Kitchen Midtown.

Sometimes you just want birthday cake. Vanilla or chocolate sponge, soft icing and sprinkles. No towering sculpture, no unusual filling and no $150 surprise.

Our pick for a small confetti-cake party is La Rocca Midtown. Its six-inch cake is $28 and serves eight. Ask Sobeys about whipped icing if an airy finish matters most. Choose Phipps for vanilla buttercream on a denser cake.

The main mistake is ordering by appearance. White frosting can be buttercream, whipped icing or cream cheese. A pretty sprinkle cake can also hide custard between its layers. Ask what is inside before paying.

The short list: cake, size and price

Listed cake prices range from $28 at La Rocca to a starting price of $80 at The Cupcake Shoppe

Prices checked September 16–17, 2026. Amounts are Canadian dollars. Delivery, special designs and extra decorations can change the total. Serving counts come from the sellers and assume their slice sizes.

Cake Displayed price Serves Best reason to choose it
La Rocca Birthday Confetti, six-inch $28, or $30 with message 8 Straightforward small-party choice
La Rocca Birthday Confetti, eight-inch $36, or $38 with message 12 More cake without custom-design pricing
Phipps Really Vanilly, mini $33.99 3–4 Small vanilla-buttercream cake
Phipps Really Vanilly, small $47.99 6–8 Denser cake with buttercream
Phipps Really Vanilly, large $76.99 12–16 Larger version of the same cake
The Cupcake Shoppe, six-inch custom cake From $80 6–10 A design or more control over the order
Longo’s Real Cream Tuxedo, eight-by-six-inch $31.99 12–14 Chocolate, vanilla and mousse together

La Rocca is our value pick here because it gives you the requested cake style at a clear price. Longo’s looks good on cost per serving, but its mousse (a light, creamy filling) and ganache (chocolate mixed with cream) make it a different dessert. The Cupcake Shoppe makes more sense when decoration is part of the point.

La Rocca: the easiest confetti-cake choice

La Rocca’s three-layer Birthday Confetti Cake with vanilla frosting and sprinkles

The Birthday Confetti Cake at La Rocca Midtown has three layers and vanilla frosting. The store is at 2638 Yonge Street, north of Eglinton.

The two listed sizes make ordering simple: six inches for eight servings, or eight inches for 12. A message on a small chocolate piece adds $2. These are the Midtown shop’s prices, not a promise that every supermarket selling La Rocca charges the same.

The product contains egg, milk, soy and wheat, with possible peanut, tree-nut and sulphite exposure. The description says vanilla frosting. It does not establish that the icing is whipped cream or a particular buttercream recipe.

Choose this for a familiar sprinkle cake and a sensible small-party budget. Get a quote before asking for a larger custom version.

Phipps: choose it for vanilla buttercream

Phipps Really Vanilly cake with white buttercream and colourful sprinkles
Phipps names vanilla buttercream and describes this cake as dense. Photo: Phipps Bakery. Image source.

At 420 Eglinton Avenue West, Phipps’ Really Vanilly Birthday Cake is a direct match for vanilla cake, vanilla buttercream and sprinkles.

But the bakery describes the cake as dense. That is useful information. Choose it for a substantial slice, not because you expect a feather-light sponge. Its live size options listed the mini at $33.99, small at $47.99 and large at $76.99 when checked.

Be careful with the name “Chocolate Vanilla Cake.” Phipps describes that product as vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream and chocolate fudge on top. It is not automatically chocolate sponge with vanilla icing.

Call 416-481-9111 for that exact combination, or for one chocolate layer and one vanilla layer. The mixed-layer request is not confirmed as a standard menu option.

The ordering policy asks for at least two days for custom sizes and large orders. Same-day needs require a call. Order early when the flavour combination matters.

Grocery-store cakes: ask about the icing first

Sobeys: start here for whipped icing

Sobeys’ celebration-cake service lets you choose the size, cake, filling, icing and message. It says some in-store orders need as little as 24 hours, depending on the bakery.

The retailer also lists a white celebration cake with whipped icing. That makes Sobeys a better starting point than guessing what a white-frosted cake contains.

Ask your branch for vanilla or chocolate cake, the lightest icing it offers and your preferred filling. “Whipped icing” does not necessarily mean fresh whipped cream. Get the exact ingredients if that distinction matters.

Metro: pick Swiss chocolate for a chocolate-heavy cake

Metro’s gourmet-cake range includes a Swiss Chocolate Truffle cake made with Lindt chocolate. It is the useful lead if your birthday person wants chocolate throughout.

For chocolate sponge with vanilla icing, ask the bakery about a custom celebration cake instead. Do not buy the truffle cake expecting the same thing. Branch selection and prices need a local check.

Longo’s: a useful alternative if mousse is welcome

Longo’s Real Cream Tuxedo Cake combines chocolate and vanilla cake with chocolate and vanilla mousse and ganache. The eight-by-six-inch version was listed at $31.99 for 12 to 14 servings.

It is a sensible alternative for a group that likes both flavours. Skip it if fluffy vanilla icing is the whole reason you are shopping.

Longo’s says catering orders need 48 hours. Arrange custom cakes in store. Ask the bakery directly about a plain vanilla-frosted option rather than assuming the online catering menu shows every possibility.

Costco: useful for a crowd, with Canadian ordering rules

Costco’s Canadian SameDay page listed a white cake at $28.36 when checked. That is an online delivery-channel price, not a verified warehouse-counter price.

The listing directs custom orders to the warehouse in person. It also says decorations can vary. Confirm the current size, serving count, flavour choices, pickup deadline and price with that bakery.

Do not follow a US guide telling you to order a custom cake through the Costco app. Costco’s app instructions explicitly exclude Canadian warehouses.

The Canadian white-cake ingredient list includes shortening-based icing. Do not assume the word “buttercream” in a web address guarantees butter as the main fat. Small round funfetti cakes and fruit-topped Chantilly cakes are separate stock questions.

Costco makes most sense when you already have access and enough guests to use the cake. Buying a membership for one small birthday needs a closer look at what a Costco membership costs and offers.

Summerhill Market: check the branch for Funfetti

Summerhill’s own Funfetti cake is a useful lead for a smaller celebration. The current bakery page confirms its in-house cake range, but does not give a dependable branch-by-branch Funfetti stock count or price.

Availability is not confirmed as of September 16, 2026. Confidence is moderate that the product remains a useful lead, based on recent customer recommendations and retailer listings. Exact sizes and stock need a bakery check.

Try the Forest Hill store at 484 Eglinton Avenue West, 416-941-2574, or your nearest Summerhill location. Ask whether the cake is Summerhill’s own, what icing it uses and how many it serves. A delivery-app price can differ from the shelf price.

Call before travelling specifically for it.

St. Lawrence Market: order from an actual cake vendor

Rows of small desserts in Eve’s Temptations display case
Eve’s Temptations at St. Lawrence Market. Whole birthday cakes need a separate order and pickup confirmation. Photo: Eve’s Temptations. Image source.

“Try St. Lawrence Market” is too vague when you need a birthday cake. A specific starting point is Eve’s Temptations on the lower level at 95 Front Street East.

Its cake menu lists Vanilla Sprinkle in five- and eight-inch sizes, plus a six-inch Milk Chocolate Vanilla and a six-inch Chocolate Birthday cake. Confirm the filling and icing for the chocolate options rather than relying on the names.

Custom cake orders have a 72-hour minimum lead time and can include a message plaque. Call 416-366-7437 for the price and pickup confirmation.

Choose this if a market pickup fits your plans. Do not leave a custom order until the day before the party.

Nothing Bundt Cakes: good for cream-cheese-frosting fans

Nothing Bundt Cakes in Etobicoke is at 148 North Queen Street, units G3/G4, 416-622-2253. Its flavour range includes Confetti and Classic Vanilla.

The brand’s signature frosting is cream cheese. That gives it a different taste from plain vanilla buttercream. The Canadian ordering menu lists a Bundt serving eight, a Big Bundt serving 18 and a tiered version serving 26.

Choose it because you want that cake-and-frosting combination. Skip it when the birthday person specifically wants a conventional layer cake with airy vanilla icing. Check the total with your chosen decoration because a decorated package is not the same price as every plain cake.

More options for a particular cake or design

The Cupcake Shoppe, 2587 Yonge Street: Its menu includes vanilla flavours and a chocolate cupcake with vanilla buttercream called Yonge Eligible Chocolate. A $5 cupcake is a useful way to check the flavour before discussing a whole cake. Custom six-inch cakes start at $80.

Ask about filling thickness, icing style and design charges. Fondant is a smooth sugar paste used for decoration. It adds a different texture and sweetness; do not order it just for the photo if your main aim is a simple slice.

Paris Baguette: The Celebration Party Cake has four layers of vanilla sponge, vanilla custard, buttercream and rainbow sprinkles. It serves 12. This is a clear choice for someone who likes custard, and the wrong shortcut for someone who wants only cake and icing. Confirm price and collection with the branch, including the North York café at 4841 Yonge Street.

Yummy Market: Its custom-cake service is useful when you need to discuss a particular filling or size. The stores are at 4400 Dufferin Street and 1390 Major Mackenzie Drive West in Maple. The second is not in Markham. Requests for funfetti, cooked-flour icing, sour-cream icing or toasted-milk flavours still need a direct answer and quote.

Dairy Queen: Choose an ice-cream cake if the familiar fudge-and-crunch centre matters more than having sponge cake. Custom messages, colours and selected character designs are available through its cake service. An eight-inch round serves eight to 10, and a ten-inch serves 12 to 16. A sheet cake serves 20 to 24.

The custom-cake page recommends ordering at least two days ahead; confirm the branch’s actual deadline. Ask your branch whether it will add extra crunch and what that costs. An old “double crunch” price is not a chain-wide offer.

Caldense: a confirmed confetti cake with a custom-order route

Caldense’s white confetti cake with piped edging and rainbow sprinkles

Caldense’s current cake menu confirms confetti vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream for both the filling and outer icing. That makes it a direct match for this search, rather than just a bakery to try on the off chance.

Its cake request form lets you name the pickup branch, serving count and shape. It also separates sponge, filling and outer icing. Vanilla and chocolate sponge, whipped cream and vanilla buttercream are among the choices.

Ask the Dundas West branch for a rectangular cake and a written quote. The site says the team will reply with pricing and details within 24 hours. That is a response target, not a promise that the cake will be ready the next day. For urgent requests, the form lists 416-760-9993.

Choose Caldense when you want to discuss the exact cake layers or need a sheet-cake quote. An old report that it cost one-third of another custom cake is not a current price comparison.

Other leads worth a phone call

These suggestions are retained because they could solve a nearby shopper’s problem. Checked September 16, 2026: the exact cake offers below are unconfirmed. Confidence is lower than for the products linked above. They come from customer reports, supported where possible by current shop or custom-order information. A bakery confirmation would resolve the gaps.

  • The Sweet Potato, 108 Vine Avenue: A funfetti cake was recommended, but current sizes and custom-order rules remain unclear. Call 437-922-4740 through its customer-service contact. An old birthday promotion is not a current free-cake offer.
  • Bakerbots: Carrot cake is an alternative if the group is flexible about flavour. A customer liked its moist texture and restrained raisins, and reported message writing rather than elaborate designs. Those are personal observations, not a verified recipe or allergy promise. The bakery’s own profile confirms 1242 Bloor Street West. Agree on the cake, message and pickup time before ordering. Do not use its old Delaware Avenue address.
  • Loblaws at Carlton Street: Ask the bakery about a basic custom cake, icing options and its actual deadline. No current branch quote was confirmed.
  • Costco’s smaller cakes: Ask about round funfetti and fruit-topped Chantilly stock. Historical $14 and roughly $28 reports do not establish today’s price or size.

For a fruit-based alternative, ask about T&T’s mango cakes or Whole Foods’ Berry Chantilly cake. T&T’s current online birthday range includes Mango Mousse Cake. That is a separate product from a fresh-mango cake.

These answer a different flavour request. An old T&T promotion and US enthusiasm for a Whole Foods cake do not establish today’s Toronto price or stock. Check the exact cake and branch before travelling.

Order the cake you actually want

Give the bakery four separate instructions: cake flavour, filling, outer icing and decoration. “Chocolate birthday cake with white icing” leaves too much open.

For example: “Chocolate cake, vanilla filling and vanilla icing, no cream cheese or custard, with a short message.” If softness matters most, ask which icing is the lightest and whether you can try a cupcake or slice.

For an Elmo, Sesame Street or Paw Patrol theme, ask about an approved character design, a simple topper or matching cookies. A full sculpted cake is unnecessary when the child mainly wants the character on the table.

Another option is a few smaller cakes or cupcakes. That gives a mixed-age group some choice without committing everyone to one filling. Check the total first: several small cakes can cost more than one large cake.

If you would rather bake, a boxed confetti mix with homemade icing is a practical route. Follow the cake package, and use a tested vanilla-buttercream recipe. Suggestions to add cream cheese, almond flour, extra extracts or other ingredients to a mix are untested variations here. They can change the result and introduce allergens.

Keep the box level, allow room in the fridge when the bakery requires it and ask when to take the cake out before serving. Dairy Queen needs a freezer plan. A long TTC journey and a warm room should be part of the order discussion.

For a birthday outing before cake, our rainy-day Toronto guide has indoor ideas. If you would rather go out for dessert, see late-night dessert in Toronto.

Order by portions, icing and transport

Give the bakery the number of adults and children, whether cake is the main dessert and how you plan to cut it. A tall cake can yield more servings than a wide, low cake with the same diameter, so use the bakery's serving guide.

Party need Sensible order
Small family celebration A standard ready-made cake with a written message
Large mixed-age group A sheet cake or simple large cake that is easy to portion
Several dietary needs Separate clearly labelled desserts rather than one risky compromise
Character theme on a budget A simple cake plus an approved topper or themed candles
Long drive or TTC trip A stable cake the bakery says can travel at that temperature

Ask for the final wording, colours, filling, icing, pickup time and allergen statement in writing. Spell every name. Confirm whether candles, a knife, plates or a topper are included.

Clear a flat space in the vehicle or carry the box level with two hands. Do not place it on a sloped car seat. La Rocca is the easiest confetti-cake choice. Choose Phipps when vanilla buttercream is the point, and a grocery sheet cake when serving a crowd matters more than a custom design.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I start for a simple confetti cake under $40?

La Rocca Midtown listed its six-inch Birthday Confetti cake at $28 and its eight-inch at $36 on September 16, 2026. A message adds $2. Delivery is separate, and other retailers set their own prices.

Is buttercream the same as whipped icing?

No. Ask the bakery what it uses rather than judging by colour. Sobeys offers a white cake with whipped icing, while Phipps names vanilla buttercream and Nothing Bundt Cakes uses cream-cheese frosting.

Which cake has vanilla custard inside?

Paris Baguette’s Celebration Party Cake has vanilla custard between vanilla sponge layers. Choose it if you want that filling. Ask for a different product if you want only cake and icing.

How much cake should I order?

Use the seller’s serving guide for the exact cake, then allow for how your group eats. A six-inch custom cake and a six-inch supermarket cake are not necessarily the same height or weight. Order more if guests expect large slices or you want leftovers.

Can I order a custom Costco cake through the app in Canada?

Costco’s published custom-cake app instructions exclude Canadian warehouses. The Canadian white-cake listing says to place custom orders in person. Confirm your warehouse’s lead time rather than using a US deadline.

How early should I order a birthday cake?

There is no single deadline. Eve’s Temptations lists 72 hours, Phipps asks at least two days for custom sizes and large orders, and Sobeys says some in-store orders take as little as 24 hours. A detailed design can need more notice, so get the pickup date confirmed.

Can a bakery make a character cake without fondant?

Ask for a simple iced cake with a topper, edible image or approved character decoration. Availability and design rules vary by shop. Ask for the full price before agreeing to custom work.

Which birthday cakes are safe for someone with a nut allergy?

There is no safe blanket answer from a flavour name or a customer review. Give the bakery the exact allergy and ask about ingredients, shared equipment and its handling process. La Rocca’s listed confetti cake has a possible peanut and tree-nut warning.

For a straightforward order, start with La Rocca. If fluffy icing is the deciding factor, call Sobeys first. Spend extra on a custom cake only when the design or exact filling matters to the person whose birthday it is.
