For cheap paint in Toronto, start with a public discount on the right product, then compare the cost of the whole job. A cheaper can is a poor deal if it needs more coats or leaves you buying a second, slightly different colour.
For a small white-wall job, Rotblott's listed $39.99 gallon gives you a concrete local price to compare. For a repeatable custom colour, get a Dulux Club quote. Mistints are the budget alternative when colour is flexible. Skip them when you need several matching cans.
Use a discount you actually qualify for
The Dulux Club programme advertises 25% off regular-priced Dulux-manufactured paint and 10% off accessories. Check the product exclusions and current terms before ordering.
CAA South Central Ontario's partner listing also lists a Dulux member offer. You need the qualifying membership. Don't assume two promotions can be stacked just because both appear online.
The Dulux buy-one-get-one promotion dated September 2 to 22 is over. We checked on September 29. An old sale graphic isn't a current price.
Ask for a written quote showing the exact product, finish, tint, can size and total. That gives you something useful to compare with another shop. A contractor's private account or an employee-only offer is not a public deal.
Compare the room, not the can

Measure the wall area and subtract large openings. Then use the paint maker's stated coverage and recommended coats. Ask whether the surface needs primer, especially when covering a strong colour or a repaired patch.
Here is a made-up example to show the maths. A $45 can that makes you buy three cans costs $135. A $60 can that finishes the job in two costs $120. Neither figure tells you which actual paint will cover your wall; the point is to compare the completed job.
Don't buy a large pail just because the unit price is lower. Storage, leftover paint and whether you'll ever use the colour again belong in the decision.
We haven't run a controlled paint test, so this guide isn't claiming that one brand hides better or lasts longer than another.
Rotblott's: a downtown price you can actually check

Address: 443 Adelaide Street West. Phone: 416-703-0456.
Rotblott's paint catalogue lists a one-gallon white eggshell paint-and-primer product at $39.99. That is a useful budget benchmark for this exact product, not a claim that it covers as well as every other paint.
The same catalogue lists a four-inch, three-piece roller kit at $6.99 and a 946 mL Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer at $19.99. Buy separate primer only if the surface and coating need it. The paint and roller kit alone total $46.98 at those displayed prices, before any checkout additions.
The store's current site also advertises mistints. Ask for today's finish, colour, quantity and price. We have not confirmed the old $7.99 mistint claim as a current offer.
Regular hours are Monday to Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Friday to 6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Confirm holiday hours and stock before a special trip.
Start here if downtown pickup is convenient and this white eggshell product suits the job. Choose a quoted custom colour elsewhere when matching or a different finish matters more.
A better order for a low-cost paint search
Start with the surface and finish you need. Then compare public offers from specialist paint stores, home-improvement stores and discount stock. Searching only for the cheapest can puts the decision in the wrong order.
| Buying route | Best use | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Public paint-store loyalty discount | A planned job needing a repeatable colour | Discount applies to specified products and regular prices |
| A dated manufacturer sale | A project that can wait | Old sale pages remain searchable after the offer ends |
| Hardware-store regular stock | A straightforward price comparison | Product lines and coverage differ |
| Mistint shelf | Small, flexible projects | Exact colour and repeat supply are uncertain |
| Donated or leftover paint | A job where known product history is available | Storage condition and quantity can be hard to verify |
Check Sherwin-Williams' Canadian offers page as a second specialist-store comparison. Use the Canadian terms, not a US sale calendar or an employee discussion. We are not treating an unverified future sale date as a current discount.
How much paint do you need?
Measure each wall's width and height. Add the areas, subtract substantial openings and multiply by the number of coats the product requires. Divide that by the coverage stated for the actual product.
For example, a simple 10-by-12-foot room with an 8-foot ceiling has 352 square feet of wall area before subtracting doors and windows. Two coats mean 704 square feet of application. This is a geometry example, not a promise that a particular can will cover the room.
Texture, repairs, colour changes and the surface's condition affect the job. Use the product's technical information and ask the store about your wall. Do not assume a “paint and primer” label removes every need for preparation or a separate primer.
Round up to a sensible purchase amount only after doing that calculation. Keep some properly labelled paint for future touch-ups if the product's storage guidance permits it. Buying double the amount “just in case” is not a budget strategy.
Ask for a quote you can compare
Send the same information to each store: room dimensions, wall condition, current colour, new colour, sheen and whether you are doing the work yourself. Ask for the exact product line and can size.
A useful quote separates paint, primer if required, tinting, supplies, delivery and tax. Ask whether the discount is already included. A percentage off an unknown regular price is not enough to compare two stores.
Use the same finish and intended surface across quotes. Interior wall paint, trim paint and exterior coatings are not substitutes just because they share a colour name.
If the store suggests a more expensive line, ask what problem it solves for your job. Better advice is specific: a suitable finish, a compatible surface or a documented coverage requirement. “Premium” alone is not an explanation.
Mistints: a good bargain for the right project
Mistints are strongest for small jobs with flexible colours. Think of a shelf, a small room or an accent area where you can use the quantity available. They are weakest when you need several perfectly matching cans or a landlord-approved colour.
Read the label before the price. Confirm whether it is interior or exterior paint, water-based or another type, and the correct coating for the surface. Ask whether it has been opened, how much remains and whether the store can identify the formula.
Have enough for the complete job. Do not assume a future can can be matched exactly from an altered label. If buying multiple cans, ask the paint store how to manage consistency for that product.
A bargain can with an unknown storage history needs more caution. Do not use paint that a professional tells you is spoiled or unsuitable. Saving on materials is pointless if you must strip or repaint the result.
Save on tools without buying the wrong ones
Borrow reusable tools when they are clean and appropriate for the coating. A sound tray, extension pole and drop cloth can reduce the initial bill. Check brush and roller recommendations for the product rather than taking any cheap pack from the shelf.
Spend where it prevents damage or rework. Protect floors, move furniture and allow the stated drying and recoating time. Rushing a second coat because the room needs to be used tonight can turn a small job into a larger one.
Buy sample quantities when the colour decision is uncertain. Seeing a colour in the actual room is more useful than buying a large pail from a phone-screen image. Consider the room at different times of day before committing.
Rentals: agree on the job before changing the walls
If you rent, get the owner's agreement about the colour, scope and any return-to-original expectation before painting. Keep the written exchange. A cheap makeover is not cheap if it creates an avoidable dispute at move-out.
If painting is being proposed because of dampness, peeling or another building problem, report the underlying issue. New paint is not a repair for a leak. Ask what needs fixing before covering the evidence.
Do not sand an unknown old coating without checking how to handle it safely. For an older surface, ask the property owner or a qualified professional about appropriate preparation. The cost estimate should include suitable preparation, not just the visible finish.
Other local shops and stock leads
Millwick Paint & Wallpaper appears in Benjamin Moore's official store locator. That verifies a retailer to contact, not a factory-outlet price or a guaranteed public contractor rate.
Benjamin Moore's store locator confirms Colour X at 111 Avenue Road. It is another central quote option, but no like-for-like bargain price is confirmed here. Colour X's own location page mixes in a Woodbridge address, so use the verified Avenue Road address and confirm pickup details directly.
As of September 30, bargain claims for Commander or factory-direct paint, Cloverdale, Home Hardware, Canadian Tire and Costco remain unconfirmed for a matching current product. Confidence is low because size, line, eligibility and stock differ. A dated public quote for the same paint would make them comparable.
Habitat ReStore GTA sells donated home-improvement goods, but that does not confirm paint stock at your nearest shop. Call first. We also found no current City free-paint exchange. Its hazardous-waste service is a disposal route.
Use these as enquiries if they are convenient. Do not cross the city for an old $3 or $8 mistint report. Artist acrylics and automotive coatings are not substitutes for ordinary wall paint, even when a discussion calls all of them “paint.”
Leftovers, storage and disposal
Keep the product name, colour formula and date with the can. Follow the manufacturer's storage instructions, including temperature and sealing. A can abandoned on a freezing balcony may not be useful for next year's touch-up.
Offer usable leftovers only with an honest description of the product and condition. Do not give someone an unlabelled container and guess what is inside. A recipient needs to know what surface and cleanup method it requires.
For disposal, use Toronto's hazardous-waste guidance linked above. Do not pour paint down a sink, street drain or onto the ground. Confirm the correct route for the type and condition of what remains.
The cheapest successful job is the one you paint once. Get the quantity, product and preparation right, then use a real public discount to lower that total.
Frequently asked questions
Is the September Dulux buy-one-get-one sale still on?
No. The advertised September 2 to 22 period has ended. Check the current promotion page for any replacement offer.
Can anyone use a CAA paint discount?
You need the qualifying membership and must meet the offer terms. A member benefit is not a universal sale price.
Are mistints always cheaper?
They are sold as discounted stock, but the useful comparison is whether the product and quantity suit your job. Ask the store for its actual price and return rule.
Should I buy the biggest pail?
Only if you need that amount. A lower price per litre is not a saving when much of the paint is left unused.
Can I get free paint from the City?
We did not confirm a current giveaway programme. The City’s hazardous-waste service accepts paint for disposal, which is a different service.
