Thanksgiving Alone in Toronto: Free Outings, Solo Meals and Plans for 2026

Riverdale Farm is our first choice for a free Thanksgiving Monday outing. It opens on holidays, needs no booking and gives you a reason to leave home without buying a ticket. For a proper turkey dinner for one, choose REIGN’s $51 main.

For a quieter outdoor afternoon, choose Toronto Botanical Garden. For a rainy Monday, choose the ROM. The AGO is a weekend option. Skip a children’s fall festival unless you actually want the rides and family noise. The biggest planning trap is assuming normal opening hours apply on Monday.

Thanksgiving is Monday, October 12, 2026. The long weekend runs from Saturday, October 10. You can mark it on any of those days, with turkey, ramen, a walk or nothing special at all.

This guide covers being alone by choice and being alone when you would prefer company. Those are different needs. We have not personally tested these outings. The recommendations below come from current venue information and the practical fit for one person.

Checked September 10, 2026. Confirmed dates are separated from regular schedules and plans that still need a holiday announcement.

Choose a plan that matches the day you want

Start with two decisions: do you want to leave home, and do you want to talk to people? A crowded place can give you background company. It does not guarantee a conversation.

Your priorityOur pickCost and main catch
A free Monday outingRiverdale Farm and CabbagetownFree admission. Food and travel extra. It is a short outing, not a full day of attractions.
A quiet garden walkToronto Botanical Garden and the open parts of Edwards GardensFree gardens. Parking is paid. Ravine paths and indoor holiday services need separate checks.
A rainy Thanksgiving MondayROMOctober 12 opening confirmed, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Choose the date and ticket type for the current price.
A rainy Saturday or SundayAGORegular adult admission $30. The normal Monday schedule is closed.
Being around people without having to chatA film at Revue CinemaRegular adult ticket $15 including tax. October holiday films are not yet confirmed here.
A traditional meal for oneREIGN’s Thanksgiving turkey main$51 before tax and any tip. Dessert and drinks cost more.
A home meal with leftoversFarm Boy’s dinner for two$99.99 listed price for the package. Order deadline October 4; pickup October 10. Needs reheating.
Quiet time by the lakeColonel Samuel Smith ParkNo attraction ticket. Shoreline work limits some access. Wind can spoil a long sit.
A useful commitmentA confirmed volunteer shiftRegister first. A Thanksgiving shift or a new friendship is not promised.
A low-energy dayFood bought ahead, one film and an optional short walkYou set the spending. The meal does not need to be a holiday package.

These are different kinds of days. Do not book an expensive dinner to solve a need for company, or a long hike when what you want is a warm room and somewhere to sit.

Riverdale Farm: the most dependable free holiday outing

Explore the trails at Riverdale Farm Toronto
Official venue photograph. Date of photograph not supplied. Photo: Riverdale Farm Stewardship Group.

Riverdale Farm is at 201 Winchester Street, at the east end of Winchester in Cabbagetown. It lists 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, including public holidays, with free admission.

Allow roughly 45 to 75 minutes for a relaxed look around. That is our planning estimate, not a timed attraction. See the barns and gardens, then add a walk along Winchester and nearby residential streets if you feel like it.

The farm lists an 11:30 a.m. daily animal demonstration. Check the chalkboard for that day’s activity. It is a working farm, not a place to feed or handle every animal. Pets and bicycles are not allowed inside, apart from service animals under its access rules.

The farm describes visitor areas as wheelchair accessible. Ask about the specific paths you need, especially after rain. Free entry does not remove the limits of an outdoor site.

Choose it if: you want a modest, unhurried visit with an easy exit. Skip it if: farm animals and a neighbourhood walk hold no interest. A free admission price is not a reason to spend your only day off somewhere you will find dull.

A simple Cabbagetown Monday

Aim to arrive around 10:30 a.m., look around, and catch the demonstration if it interests you. Leave by noon or stay longer. Walk back along Winchester rather than committing to a ravine route you have not checked.

Bring a sandwich and water if you want to keep spending low. If you want a restaurant lunch, settle the opening hours and price before the holiday. The farm’s holiday opening does not tell you what nearby kitchens will do.

Keep the afternoon optional. Going home after one good outing is a complete plan. You do not need to cross the city for a second attraction.

Toronto Botanical Garden: the best quiet alternative

Pink flowers in the Toronto Botanical Garden trial garden with visitors in the background
The trial garden at Toronto Botanical Garden. Official archive photograph from 2024. Photo: Toronto Botanical Garden.

The Toronto Botanical Garden visitor guide lists the gardens as free, from dawn to dusk, every day. The address is 777 Lawrence Avenue East, near Leslie Street. Edwards Gardens is the neighbouring City park at 755 Lawrence Avenue East.

This is our pick for someone who wants flowers, trees and space to move at their own pace. Give the main gardens 45 to 75 minutes, with more time if you like looking closely at plants. There is no need to turn the visit into a long ravine hike.

The catch for drivers is parking: the listed rate is $4 an hour, to a $16 daily maximum. Two hours costs $8 at that rate. Garden admission is free; a car trip is not.

Visitor-centre hours and garden access are separate. The centre’s regular hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but an October 12 indoor holiday schedule is not confirmed here. Plan your toilet and warm-up stops before leaving.

Do not assume the Wilket Creek route through the ravine is fully open. Check current notices and barriers. Choose the managed garden area if an uncertain trail connection would make the trip difficult.

Choose this over a paid fall festival for a quiet solo afternoon. Go for the garden itself. Peak autumn colour is not guaranteed on Thanksgiving weekend.

Colonel Samuel Smith Park: a lake walk with a construction catch

The shoreline and paths at Colonel Samuel Smith Park during TRCA restoration work
Colonel Samuel Smith Park in a 2026 TRCA project photograph. Follow the current access map and barriers. Photo: Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.

Colonel Samuel Smith Park, 3145 Lake Shore Boulevard West, is the west-end choice for a lakefront walk and birdwatching. Bring binoculars if you have them. You can enjoy watching what is there without knowing every bird’s name.

But this is not a promise of an uninterrupted shoreline loop. TRCA’s current restoration page says the Whimbrel Point work finished in spring 2026 while the wider project continues. Some shared paths have time-based access, and other work areas remain restricted.

Use the current access map and signs. Stay on the open route, turn back at a closure and leave the construction area alone. Do not use an old social-media walking route as proof that every path is available.

Allow an hour for a short outing, then extend it only if the weather and access suit you. Lake wind can make a pleasant inland afternoon feel much colder here. Bring a windproof layer and something warm to drink.

Choose it for water and birds. Choose the botanical garden instead if a sheltered, more contained outing matters more than the lake. The name Whimbrel Point does not mean those birds will be there in October.

AGO: a good indoor weekend plan, with Monday still unresolved

Visitors talking and looking at art in an AGO gallery

The Art Gallery of Ontario, 317 Dundas Street West, lists regular Saturday and Sunday hours of 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Adult single admission is $30. The annual pass is $40, and Ontario residents under 25 have a free annual-pass route under its eligibility rules.

For a solo visit, choose two or three areas that interest you. Leave time to sit. There is no prize for getting through every room, and trying to do that can turn an enjoyable afternoon into a chore.

The regular schedule says closed Monday. We have not verified a special opening for October 12. Book Saturday or Sunday unless the gallery confirms the holiday date you want.

The AGO also lists its Bistro as temporarily closed. Do not plan your entire meal around an old gallery restaurant recommendation.

St. Patrick Station is the nearby subway stop to use when planning the walk. Check the TTC’s current route and elevator notices for your travel date.

Choose the AGO if art interests you. If it does not, our rainy-day Toronto guide will give you a more useful starting point than buying a gallery ticket out of obligation.

ROM: the confirmed indoor choice for Thanksgiving Monday

Dinosaur skeletons in the ROM dinosaur gallery
Photo: Royal Ontario Museum.

The ROM’s October 2026 calendar confirms 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, October 12. It also lists those hours for Saturday, October 10, and Sunday, October 11.

That makes it the better museum choice when Monday is the day you have free. Choose a few galleries that interest you, such as dinosaurs or world cultures, and allow two or three hours as a planning estimate. You can stop sooner without having to match anyone else’s pace.

The museum is at 100 Queen’s Park. Its visitor information directs visitors to the Weston entrance on Queen’s Park while the Bloor Street entrance is closed for construction. The same page recommends St. George Station’s Bedford Road exit if you need an elevator. Check current TTC elevator notices as well.

Choose October 12 in the official ticket system and compare the admission choices before paying. A separately ticketed exhibition can change the price. We have not verified a final one-person checkout total for that date.

Choose the ROM when you want a substantial indoor Monday outing. Skip an expensive exhibition add-on unless its subject is a real draw for you. Museum opening hours do not guarantee that every café, gallery or special activity has the same schedule.

Revue Cinema: company without a conversation

The Revue Cinema marquee on Roncesvalles Avenue

A cinema is a good middle ground between staying home and attending a social event. You share a room and a film, but nobody needs you to make small talk.

Revue Cinema is at 400 Roncesvalles Avenue, roughly an 8-to-10-minute walk from Dundas West Station and Bloor GO/UP Express, according to the cinema. Regular adult admission is $15 including tax. Special screenings can cost more.

The cinema uses first-come seating. It suggests arriving 30 minutes before the show. The front entrance, concessions area and auditorium are accessible, but the bathroom stalls are not wheelchair accessible. That is a serious limit for a long visit.

Its published calendar is still showing September 2026 when checked. Do not treat an old Thanksgiving screening of a particular film as an October 2026 booking. Choose from the actual October ticket listings when released.

The regular Tuesday discount does not turn Thanksgiving Monday into a cheap-ticket day. Also check the conditions attached to your screening. The general information page contains conflicting refund wording, so ask the cinema before paying if cancellation flexibility is essential.

Book a film you want to see. Skip the outing if you are only hoping the audience will become a social group. A film provides shared space, not a guaranteed introduction.

REIGN: a confirmed Thanksgiving turkey dinner for one

REIGN at the Fairmont Royal York, 100 Front Street West, has confirmed Thanksgiving features for October 10, 11 and 12, 2026. You can order the turkey main on its own alongside the restaurant’s regular menu.

The $51 turkey plate includes turkey breast, stuffing, truffle mashed potatoes, Brussels sprouts, gravy and cranberry chutney. Pumpkin pie is $17. The $23 split-pea soup contains smoked ham hock, so it is not a vegetarian starter.

This is our strongest verified choice for one person who wants a traditional meal without buying several servings or a whole turkey. It is also a substantial splurge.

OrderMenu subtotalWith 13% HSTWith HST and an optional 18% tip on the subtotal
Turkey main$51$57.63$66.81
Turkey main and pumpkin pie$68$76.84$89.08

These are calculations from the posted prices, not a final bill or a required tip. Drinks, extra dishes and any other charges would add to them. Confirm your booking’s terms before paying a deposit or accepting a cancellation policy.

The restaurant is across Front Street from Union Station. Book for one person through the official reservation route. If the online calendar does not show a suitable solo table, ask the restaurant directly rather than booking for two and assuming it will adjust.

Choose REIGN when the traditional meal is the point of your day. Skip it if a roughly $67 main-course outing would leave you worrying about the bill. A favourite takeout meal can do the job for less, with no need to imitate a hotel dinner.

Eating at home: what to buy and what to avoid

A bowl of creamy soup with herbs on a Thanksgiving table
An archive soup photograph used on Farm Boy’s 2026 dinner-for-two page. The current menu lists parsnip soup. Photo: Farm Boy.

A dinner package for two can work for one person who wants leftovers. It is poor value if half will go uneaten or your kitchen cannot reheat it.

Farm Boy’s 2026 dinner for two is listed at $99.99. The order deadline is October 4, with pickup on October 10 at the selected store, subject to availability. This is a chilled meal that needs reheating, not a hot counter dinner you can eat on the walk home.

The package has parsnip soup, a mandarin and goat-cheese salad, turkey breast with sides, and pumpkin sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. It contains dairy and is not a vegan option. Read the full ingredient and reheating information for your needs before ordering.

Buy it if you want a planned meal and a second serving. Skip it if you want one inexpensive plate or do not have an oven. Ask the selected store about pickup timing before building another outing around it.

A simpler single-person shopping list

For a smaller project, buy one main, one or two sides and one dessert you will finish. The following is a menu plan, not a claim that a particular store has a 2026 holiday special:

  • No-cook meal: a prepared main sold by the portion, salad or another ready-to-eat side, and a dessert slice. Confirm that the main is ready to eat rather than a chilled product that requires cooking.
  • Small hot meal: a small chicken portion, potatoes and a vegetable. Use a tested recipe and the product’s cooking directions instead of shrinking a whole-turkey recipe by guesswork.
  • Vegetarian meal: a bean or lentil main, potatoes and a vegetable, or takeout from a restaurant whose food you already like. Check gravy, soup and stuffing ingredients rather than assume they are meat-free.
  • Comfort-food meal: ramen, curry, pizza, a sandwich or whatever you actually want. The holiday does not require a turkey substitute.

Shop on Friday or Saturday if a specific product matters. St. Lawrence Market is closed on Monday, October 12, according to its 2026 holiday schedule.

Rabba advertises 24/7 stores, which makes a nearby branch worth checking for basic groceries. That is not a promise that its prepared-food counter will have turkey, a particular price or hot food at every hour.

Old bargain-meal prices and past Swiss Chalet holiday offers are not reliable 2026 quotes. We have not verified a current Swiss Chalet Thanksgiving promotion. Use the current menu for the branch you would actually order from.

Compare the number of portions, the reheating work and the total bill before choosing a package. Two advertised servings are not automatically better value than one restaurant meal.

If you want company, make the invitation small and specific

A slice of Bunner’s pumpkin pie with whipped topping
A slice of Bunner’s pumpkin pie. Photo: Bunner’s Bakeshop.

Ask one person to do one thing. “Want to walk around the farm Monday morning?” is easier to answer than “What is everyone doing for Thanksgiving?” A walk, a coffee or a shared dessert is less work than hosting a full dinner.

You do not need to invite only close friends. A colleague or neighbour you already speak with may also have an open afternoon. Give them an easy way to decline and keep a solo version of the plan. An unanswered message should not decide how your whole day goes.

If someone invites you to their meal, ask what to bring, when to arrive and whether there are food rules to know. You can accept without deciding that the invitation is pity. You can also decline if that setting would make a difficult day harder.

For an organized event, look for a dated listing with a named host, a clear location and a description of what participants will do. A board-game session or guided activity gives you something to talk about. “Thanksgiving meetup” alone tells you very little about age mix, cost, food or how social it will be.

Ask about the parts that matter: Is it open to someone coming alone? Is there an entry fee? Does the activity require drinking? Is the food vegetarian? Can you leave early? Do not assume a public listing means all of those needs are covered.

If you want company from someone far away, agree on a time for a call. It does not have to be family. Watching the same film or eating at the same time can give the call a simple shape.

For the restaurant side of going alone, see our guide to dining alone in Toronto. You do not need to apologize for a table for one.

Volunteering: arrange a real role, not a last-minute holiday fix

A volunteer with a pallet jack in the Daily Bread Food Bank warehouse
A Daily Bread Food Bank volunteer. Official photograph; capture date not supplied. Photo: Daily Bread Food Bank.

Daily Bread Food Bank’s individual volunteer page explains registration, orientation and available roles. Many shifts are at 191 New Toronto Street in south Etobicoke. Include the journey and the actual tasks when deciding whether a role suits you.

Do not arrive expecting to join a food sort without a confirmed place. Also read the year on an event page. Daily Bread’s old page titled “Thanksgiving Public Food Sort” describes October 12 and 13, 2019, not an open 2026 registration.

There is a confirmed seasonal opportunity before the holiday: the 2026 Purolator Red Bag campaign has September 19 bag delivery and September 26 collection shifts in participating neighbourhoods. Its minimum age is 11, with waiver and adult-supervision rules for younger volunteers. The work includes walking and carrying donations, with a listed ability to lift 10 pounds.

Those September dates are not Thanksgiving-day activities. They are useful if what you want is to contribute during the season. Read the current role and registration details for your area; an announcement does not guarantee an open place.

Choose volunteering because you want the work and can keep the commitment. It can put you alongside other people, but do not expect a particular age group, instant friends or a holiday meal in return.

Fall trees and paths at Evergreen Brick Works. Archive photograph. Photo: Evergreen.

Evergreen Brick Works: wait for an actual reopening notice

The current Evergreen visitor notice still says the site is closed for flood cleanup as of September 10. Picnic Café is closed and on-site activities are cancelled.

Normally, the Saturday Farmers Market at 550 Bayview Avenue is a useful place to be around people without joining an organized group. The normal Thanksgiving-weekend Saturday would be October 10. But that is a calendar calculation, not a confirmed market at the site.

Status: unconfirmed for Thanksgiving, with low confidence in planning the visit now. The basis is the active closure notice. A dated reopening and market-location announcement would change our advice. An older flood-recovery story saying “we are open” does not confirm access after the September 2026 flood.

Until then, use Riverdale Farm or the botanical garden. Do not rely on the usual shuttle, café or site facilities during the closure.

Families beside colourful inflatable attractions at PumpkinFest Toronto
PumpkinFest is built around family attractions. Archive photograph from the organizer’s site. Photo: @tripper_tales / PumpkinFest Toronto.

PumpkinFest: confirmed, but a weak fit for many solo adults

PumpkinFest Toronto is confirmed for October 9 to 12, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at 35 Carl Hall Road in Downsview Park.

The advance adult ticket is $14.99 plus HST, sold through October 8 at 11:59 p.m. That is $16.94 with HST before any additional fees. The festival-day adult price is $19.99 plus HST. Food and parking add to the outing.

The event is designed around children’s attractions. Adults cannot use the inflatables intended for children 12 and under. There is no re-entry, and the organizer lists final-sale and weather conditions.

Skip it for a quiet solo fall outing. Choose it only if the family-festival setting is what you want. Paying admission just to avoid being at home is a weak reason to go.

Three ready-to-use day plans, without a packed itinerary

Two regular-menu plates on a table at REIGN

The low-cost Monday

Have breakfast at home. Visit Riverdale Farm late in the morning, then take a short Cabbagetown walk. Eat a packed lunch or food whose price you chose ahead of time. Head home for a film, a book or a simple dinner.

Attraction admission is $0. Travel and bought food are the extra costs. If you set a $20 food allowance, treat that as your personal spending cap, not a claim that any particular restaurant will provide a full holiday dinner for $20.

Choose this when a little structure would help but a full-day schedule would feel like work.

The warm weekend afternoon

Use Saturday or Sunday for the AGO. Eat before you go, spend a couple of hours with the art that interests you, then leave without trying to finish the building. Add a film only if the actual Revue programme appeals and the cross-city journey is worth it.

Using the posted regular adult prices, AGO plus a standard Revue ticket is $45 before transport, food or any gallery checkout additions. That is a planning comparison, not a bundled ticket. You do not need both to make the day worthwhile.

The traditional dinner without cooking

Reserve REIGN for one on a confirmed Thanksgiving date. Take a short downtown walk if the weather suits you, then have the turkey main. Skip the extra course if you would rather spend that money another day.

Build the plan around the reservation time. Do not add a distant park that makes you rush back to Union. A good meal and an easy journey are enough.

Holiday logistics that can undo a good plan

Passengers boarding a red and white TTC streetcar
Passengers boarding a red and white TTC streetcar. Archive photograph. Photo: TTC.

TTC: Thanksgiving Monday service follows a Sunday schedule, starting at 6 a.m. on October 12. Check the actual route before travelling. A Sunday schedule does not mean every route has weekday frequency or that a usual connection will be quick.

Libraries: Toronto Reference Library lists closures on Sunday, October 11 and Monday, October 12. Borrow your book in advance. Its location page is the useful check for a visit, and your local branch has its own listing.

Weather and paths: choose footwear with grip, a layer for wind and a way to stay dry. Do not make a route depend on an open ravine connection after a storm. A garden visit and a lake walk need different clothing even on the same afternoon.

Mobility and toilets: check the entrance, route, seating and toilet separately. A venue calling its entrance accessible does not guarantee an accessible washroom. Revue is one example where that distinction changes the decision.

Food: buy key items ahead, check restaurant hours directly and leave room for tax and any tip. A pair-sized meal needs storage and reheating, not just a pickup time.

Working the holiday: make your plan fit your actual shift. Eat before work or arrange a meal for another day. Do not count on a late kitchen just because the grocery store around it stays open.

Our places to read in Toronto guide is useful for another day, but holiday hours still decide which indoor options are available.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free thing to do alone on Thanksgiving Monday in Toronto?

Riverdale Farm is our first pick because it lists holiday opening and free admission. Pair it with a short Cabbagetown walk. The botanical garden is the better alternative if you prefer plants and a quieter visit.

Can I get a Thanksgiving turkey dinner for one without ordering a whole package?

Yes. REIGN has a $51 turkey main on October 10, 11 and 12, 2026, before tax and any tip. Book a table for one and check the reservation terms. Other restaurants need their own current holiday-menu confirmation.

What can I do if I do not eat meat or drink alcohol?

Choose a garden, the farm, a gallery or a film, then arrange food separately. You do not need a turkey meal or a pub to take part in the weekend. Check ingredients in soups, gravy and stuffing, since dishes that look vegetable-based can contain meat.

Can I spend Thanksgiving Monday at the AGO or the library?

Do not assume so. The AGO’s regular schedule is closed Monday, and a special October 12 opening is not verified here. Toronto Reference Library has confirmed October 11 and 12 closures. The ROM is a confirmed Monday alternative. Borrow your reading ahead of time.

Is the Evergreen Brick Works market an option this Thanksgiving?

Not a dependable one yet. The site’s flood-closure notice is still active at the September 10 check, and the October market location and access are unconfirmed. Wait for a dated reopening and market announcement before making the trip.

Can I just turn up to volunteer at a food bank?

No. Register through the organization and wait for a confirmed role. Check age, orientation, access and physical requirements before accepting. A past Thanksgiving food-sort page is not proof that a current holiday shift exists.

How do I find company without joining a party?

Invite one person to a walk, coffee or dessert with a clear time and place. For an organized activity, choose a dated event with a named host and ask whether solo attendees are welcome. Keep a version of the day that still works if nobody joins you.

What if I would rather stay home?

Buy the food you want before holiday closures, choose one thing you will enjoy and leave the rest open. That could be cooking, a puzzle, a film, a game or reading. You do not have to turn a day alone into a project to justify it.
