What the app can and cannot tell you
Uber shows an estimated pickup time based on current information. That estimate can change after you request.
The app needs to match a rider and an eligible driver. The driver then has to reach the pickup through real streets. A five-minute distance on a clear map can become much longer with a left-turn restriction, road closure, streetcar, loading truck or arena crowd.
The screen does not show every reason a driver accepts or cancels. It is fair to describe what happened to you. It is not fair to claim that one hidden company decision explains every slow pickup without evidence.
Think of the wait as three separate clocks:
- Matching time: how long it takes the app to find a driver who accepts.
- Arrival time: how long that driver needs to reach the pin.
- Rematching time: the extra delay if a driver cancels and the app starts again.

Drivers may make their own decisions about requests shown to them. A very short trip, a long trip away from busy areas, a difficult destination or a pickup surrounded by traffic may receive fewer quick accepts.
That does not prove a driver “hates” your destination. It means matching is a two-sided process, not a taxi being dispatched from a stand.
A driver cancellation
The app may match you, show an approaching car and then return to matching. Drivers can cancel. Riders can cancel too, though a fee may apply under the app's terms.
Do not cancel just because the car took one odd turn. Send one message: “I am on the west side of York, outside the hotel entrance.” If the driver is not moving toward you and the wait keeps growing, read the cancellation screen before deciding.
If the driver cancels, save the trip record before requesting again. If you are charged a fee for a pickup you believe the driver did not attempt, use the app's support path and give the time, pin and what the map showed. Keep the complaint factual.
