Best Toronto Bars for Going Alone on a Weekday

The best Toronto bar for a solo weekday drink is not the loudest or most famous. It has a real bar you can sit at, staff who speak to regulars, and something happening that gives the room a shared focus.

Our best first pick is Steadfast Brewing Co. on Lansdowne. The Only Cafe is easiest in the east end. Drom Taberna is best when live music helps you feel less alone. Civil Liberties is the stronger choice for a serious cocktail.

What makes a bar good when you are alone?

A good solo bar has three things:

  • seats facing the bartender or the room
  • a reason to look around, such as music, trivia, a game or a good view
  • enough movement that one person does not feel on display

A dark booth built for six is not useful. A packed dance floor is not automatically social. The goal is a place where you can enjoy yourself even if no stranger speaks to you.

Use this test before travelling across the city:

What you wantChooseAvoid
A quiet drink aloneA long bar, early hour or rooftop viewTrivia finals and loud live bands
Easy small talkA neighbourhood taproom with regularsTable-service lounges with couples in booths
A shared focusJazz, trivia, a game or a listed performanceA room with no event and music too loud to speak
Serious cocktailsA bartender-led counter early in the nightA packed Friday service when staff cannot talk
No alcoholA cocktail bar with a real zero-proof listA brewery with one soft drink and no food

The right room depends on the result you want. “Good alone” can mean peaceful, social or simply not awkward. Those are different nights.

1. Steadfast Brewing Co.

Address: 301 Lansdowne Avenue Best night: Monday jazz or another listed event Best for: A first solo outing

Steadfast Brewing Co. feels like a neighbourhood room first and a beer destination second. The taproom has its own beer, an on-site food partner and recurring events. The current official site lists weekday opening from 3 p.m., with earlier weekend hours.

Monday jazz, trivia and other events can change from week to week. Check the current calendar or Instagram story before going. Arrive near the start, order at the bar and choose a seat with a clear view of the music.

This is our best starting point because an event gives you a reason to be there without forcing conversation.

Steadfast is less useful when you need a guaranteed quiet seat. An event that makes conversation easy can also fill the room. Check whether the calendar describes seated music, trivia or a busier party, then arrive before the listed start.

2. The Only Cafe

Address: 966 Danforth Avenue Nearest TTC: Donlands Station Best for: Beer, a patio and a mixed local crowd

The Only Cafe is part cafe, part bar and part backpackers' inn. That mix helps a solo guest. People arrive for coffee, a pint, an event or a bed upstairs. You do not stand out.

The official site lists the bar from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily. Its separate cocktail bar currently runs Thursday to Saturday in the evening, with later hours when it is busy. Live music and pay-what-you-can events appear on its current calendar.

Go on a weeknight, sit at the main bar and ask what is fresh on tap. The room is casual, not polished.

The Only works especially well when you are not sure how long you want to stay. You can begin with coffee or food, move to a pint and leave without the night feeling unfinished. The tradeoff is that the several parts of the business can feel different, so ask which room has the event or atmosphere you want.

3. Drom Taberna

Address: 458 Queen Street West Nearest TTC: Spadina or Queen streetcar Best for: Live music and a room that changes every night

Drom Taberna is one of the easiest bars in Toronto for being alone because the stage gives everyone a common subject. Its programme moves through folk, jazz, global music, jams and late sets.

The official site says weeknight walk-ins are welcome. Many weeknight shows are pay what you can. Friday and Saturday late nights may have a cover, often around $10 to $15. Current hours list Tuesday to Thursday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m., Friday and Saturday to 4 a.m., and Sunday afternoon to early morning. Monday is closed.

Check the event listing before going. A quiet folk set and a late funk jam are very different solo nights.

At Drom, the performer is the plan. Read the start time, cover and whether the listing sounds seated or dance-heavy. If you want to talk, arrive before the music becomes loud. If you want to disappear into a crowd, arrive closer to the main set.

4. Civil Liberties

Address: 878 Bloor Street West Best for: A bartender-led cocktail Watch for: No menu and no reservations

Civil Liberties is built around conversation with the bartender. Instead of choosing from a printed cocktail list, you describe flavours, spirits or a mood. That makes a solo visit feel natural.

Its current official Instagram lists walk-ins only and hours from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. The bar has a strong international reputation, which can also mean a wait.

Go early on Tuesday or Wednesday. Give the bartender a useful direction such as “bright and not sweet” or “whisky, bitter and slow.” Say your budget if it matters. Custom does not mean unlimited.

This format gives you an easy first conversation, but it does not mean the bartender can be your host all night. Order clearly, let them serve other guests and enjoy the drink without demanding constant attention.

5. Swan Dive

Address: 1631 Dundas Street West Best for: Cheap drinks, free pool and an unpolished local bar Important: Bring cash

Swan Dive is a small Dundas West bar with art, DJs, casual events and a loyal neighbourhood crowd. It is the opposite of a velvet-rope night.

Current event posts still describe no cover, low drink prices and free pool. The bar is cash only. Hours and event details are not published as clearly as they should be, so check the current Instagram feed on the day you go.

This is a better fit for someone who likes scruffy rooms and easy conversation. It is not the pick for a quiet luxury cocktail.

Free pool and small events can create a natural opening. Ask whether someone is waiting for the table before joining a game. If the room is very quiet, do not assume every regular wants a new conversation.

6. Evangeline

Address: 51 Camden Street Best for: A rooftop view and a more polished solo drink Watch for: Price and table time

Evangeline is the all-season rooftop bar at 51 Camden Street. It gives a solo guest something simple to do: order one drink and look at the city.

The current official page lists Monday to Wednesday from 5 p.m. to midnight, with longer hours later in the week. Seating is first come, first served and the listed dining window is two hours. The venue is cashless.

This is not our pick for making new friends. It is the pick for enjoying your own company in a good-looking room.

That distinction matters. A rooftop can be excellent for a solo date with yourself and poor for meeting strangers. Choose Evangeline when the view is enough reason to go.

7. Hank's Liquor

Address: 1415B Dundas Street West Best for: A small late bar after another plan Important: Cash only

Hank's is a tiny west-end bar with a rough, simple feel. Its current Instagram lists 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., a daily early happy hour and cash-only payment.

The small room can make conversation easy, but it can also fill fast. Treat it as a compact neighbourhood stop, not a place for a private table or a long cocktail menu.

Hank's is strongest as part of a short Dundas West walk. If it feels too full, do not force the night. A solo plan improves when another suitable room is within walking distance and you have already checked its hours.

The best weekday for going alone

Tuesday and Wednesday are easiest.

The room has some life, but weekend groups have not taken over. Bartenders usually have more time. Music and trivia can create an opening for conversation.

Monday can be excellent when there is a recurring event. Thursday starts to feel like the weekend in many bars. If you are anxious, arrive early and leave before the room changes.

A simple first 30 minutes

The first half hour is usually the hardest. Give it a shape.

  1. Arrive before the busiest time and choose a bar seat with a clear path out.
  2. Order one drink, food or a zero-proof option.
  3. Put your phone away for five minutes and look at the room.
  4. Ask the bartender one useful question when they are free.
  5. If an event is starting, stay through the first set or round.
  6. Decide after 30 minutes whether to stay, move or go home.

Leaving after one drink is not failure. Moving to a second bar is not required. The plan exists so anxiety does not make every small decision at once.

How to talk to people without being strange

Start with the room, not their body or personal life.

Ask what they ordered, whether they have seen the band, or which beer they liked. Speak to the bartender when they are not rushing. If the other person gives a short answer and turns away, let the conversation end.

Do not treat a solo night as a mission to collect a phone number. A good evening can be one drink, one song and no new friend.

If somebody keeps talking after you want to stop, use a clean ending: “Nice meeting you. I am going back to my book,” or, “I am going to watch the band.” You do not need to invent an emergency.

Do not share your building, hotel, room number or full trip schedule with a stranger. A friendly conversation can stay friendly without giving away the information needed to find you later.

Safety for a solo bar night

Plan the trip home before the second drink. Check the last subway and the correct Blue Night route. Compare a licensed taxi and rideshare if transit is slow.

Keep your drink with you. Tell staff if someone will not leave you alone. If you feel suddenly much more impaired than expected, ask for help and do not leave with a stranger.

Toronto bars must follow Ontario alcohol rules, but you are still responsible for your own limit. Eat first and drink water.

If a stranger offers a drink, let the bartender make and hand it to you. Do not accept an open glass that was carried from somewhere else. If you suddenly feel much more impaired than the amount you drank should cause, tell staff, contact someone you trust and do not leave alone.

What if nobody talks to you?

That does not mean you picked the wrong bar or did something wrong.

Toronto weekday rooms can be friendly without being instantly social. Regulars may know each other. Other solo guests may want quiet. A bartender may be too busy to chat.

Judge the place by three questions: Did you feel comfortable at the bar? Was there something worth drinking, eating or watching? Would you stay again for 45 minutes? Meeting someone is a bonus, not the test.

What to order if you do not drink alcohol

Ask what non-alcoholic beer, spirit or house drink is available. A good bar should be able to make something adult and balanced without alcohol.

At a brewery, the choice may be narrow. At a cocktail bar, describe the flavour you want and say clearly that it must contain no alcohol. Do not feel required to explain why.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Toronto bar to visit alone on a weekday?

Steadfast Brewing Co. is our best first pick because its taproom is casual and weeknight events provide a shared focus. Drom is better if live music is the main reason you are going.

Is it weird to go to a Toronto bar alone?

No. Sit at the bar, choose a place with music or an event, and go on Tuesday or Wednesday. Staff and regulars see solo guests often.

Where can I hear live music alone on a weeknight?

Drom Taberna has live music almost every operating night and many weeknight shows are pay what you can. Steadfast and The Only also run recurring events. Check the current schedule before leaving.

Which Toronto solo bar is best for cocktails?

Civil Liberties is the strongest choice when you want a bartender to build a drink around your taste. Go early because it accepts walk-ins only and can become busy.

Are any of these Toronto bars cash only?

Swan Dive and Hank's Liquor currently identify as cash-only bars. Bring enough for your order and tip, and check the current venue page before going.

What time should I arrive at a bar alone?

Arrive between 6 and 8 p.m. for an easier seat and more time with staff. For live music, arrive shortly before the listed start so the event gives your visit a natural shape.

How do I get home safely after a solo drink?

Check TTC service before going, keep enough phone battery for a taxi or rideshare, and do not accept a ride from someone you just met. Tell staff if you need help waiting safely.

The bottom line

Start with Steadfast, The Only or Drom. Choose a real reason to go, such as a beer, band or view. Sit at the bar, arrive early and allow the night to be good even if you talk to nobody.
